Durability:
Pros:Soft body, easy remote control, durable
Cons:Pulls a little to one side when going down the hall, sirens do not shut_off!
The Bottom Line: Very cute car, remote control is easy to use and my toddler loves it!
I am not sure how toddlers find out about remote control cars. But, my toddler did and she wanted something, anything that was a remote control that she could drive! We found the Kid Galaxy Radio Control Police Car and thought this would be an excellent first time remote control vehicle for our child to have.
The Car
The car is smaller, running about 9 inches long. The body of the car is a soft foam rubber making it safe for furniture and walls everywhere and it give the toddler set an easy car to pick up and hold. Its blue and white with larger sized black tires. There are no blinking lights that actually blink, but they do have a blue and white light bar across the top of the car.
They say this is a toy for 2 plus years old. I would think it would be better for the 3 - 6 year old range, personally.
The set up was a bit difficult and awkward. The directions were a bit vague when they specified taking off the chassis to install the 3 AA batteries in the car. Initially, we started to take the car body off, what we thought was what the directions referred to as the chassis.
After getting about half-way through taking these screws out, we noticed one little screw hole, near the front of the car that was deep set into the chassis.
My husband thought this might be the correct spot and we put the other screws back in and then had difficulty getting the correct sized and small enough screw driver to get into this other screw hole. It was narrow and needed to get in the chassis roughly 1 ½ inches. The car is lightweight and easily picked up by toddlers, partially because of the soft foam rubber type coating that makes up the vehicle body.
There is a basic on and off switch at the bottom of the car. My toddle finds this easy to control as well. She is able to turn the car on herself, drive it around and shut it back off and put it away without anyones help!
The Remote
The remote control is simple. It took a quick unscrewing of the cover and pop in a 9 volt battery and it was ready to go. It is a simple remote control. It is shaped like a steering wheel and has 15 feet of range and 27 MHz frequency.
The size is perfect for smaller hands. As mentioned previously, it is shaped like a steering wheel and it has a small antenna at the top. There is one button in the middle, making it appear like a horn where you would toot to get someones attention, but its actually the controls for the car.
You have the top have of this button that moves the car forward and the bottom of that center button makes the car kind of back up a little, but that part of the button mainly turns the vehicle to the left.
The only sound the police car makes is the police siren sound. When the vehicle is being driven by the toddler, the siren sound is going non-stop and it does not have a volume control. As with most items without volume control, the volume seems to be set a bit too high. I try to find ways to cover up the sound somewhat so that it wont hurt my daughters ears.
When the child is playing with the car and standing up driving it around, the sound probably isnt too bad. But, if for some reason they pick it up, hold it close to their ear or possibly lay down beside it playing with it, I feel the volume on our car would hurt her ears with lengthy exposure.
Overall Impressions
If you are looking for a remote control for the toddler set, this would be an excellent choice. They have a lot of variety ranging from the police car, fire trucks to garbage trucks and school buses and bulldozers. You would likely find one that would fit any toddlers wishes.
Putting the batteries in the vehicle was a bit of a pain, but once it was done, the smile on my toddlers face was unbelievable. She took the controller and was off playing around the house with this for half an hour without batting an eyelash!
The car seems to pull a bit to one side while its driving down the hallway. I am not sure if that is the cars fault in that it is getting more torque on one wheel, if the foam rubber material is rubbing against a wheel (if it is, I cant see where) or if it is just the way the car is built. But, nonetheless, my toddler is not fazed by it. She either moves it around with the remote control until it is freely moveable again or she goes to pick it up and puts it back on its merry way!
For the price, it was an excellent investment and is bringing a lot of joy to my toddler. Relatives visited today and she proudly brought this out of her room and showed it off for them. It has not been sitting on the shelf in her room for extended periods, forgotten. And, that says a lot to me!
~Thank you for spending time with me today!~
