I bought this Kidco Hearthgate for our fireplace when my son was a baby and we moved into our new house. It easily connected to the wall and was very sturdy. I never had to worry about him cracking his head like my friend's daughter did on their fireplace. As he grew and become more active and curious it was very helpful to keep him away from the hard surface and sharp corners. It also kept him safe from the heat of the fire, as well as the fire itself when the fireplace was being used. We kept the gate up when our second child came. She wasn't as curious as her brother but since the rest of the room was childproofed we didn't worry about leaving her alone in the family room for short times. As the kids have grown we started putting other items inside the gate when we wanted them out of their reach. In that way the gate provides some safe storage and because the middle of the gate opens we can get to the items easily. The gate was pricey but worth the peace of mind it gave us. I would recommend it to anyone.
