| toiletoctopus's Full Review: King Kabob |
Although I generally dislike Fairfax County, VA for its yuppies and parking lot traffic conditions, there are some aspects that make it worth spending time in. You can find any style of restaurant in this area, as its diverse population, has brought fantastic styles of cuisines. It's so easy within five minutes to drive by Chinese, French, Thai, Vietnamese, Persian, and Eithiopian establishments, and sometimes you can experience what it is like to spend time in another part of the world. This is a great thing, because its cheaper than taking a plane ride for fifteen hours, and I love dining out at different places to learn about a variety of cultures. One of my favorite foods are Afghan style kabobs. There are a lot of kabob restaurants in Fairfax County, and while my favorite one went out of business, I'm happy to have found the King Kabob.
This establishment is located in the City of Fairfax, and it recently had some renovations. It's still a "hole in the wall," but as I've found out, some of the best places to eat aren't necessarily decked out with expensive decorations. The King Kabob is very casual, and you order your food at the front register, and they call your number when its ready. You can watch your kabobs being cooked on the fire pit in front of you, and this makes you even hungrier. The tables are nothing fancy, as they are the standard square shaped ones you can find anywhere, with pull out cloth seats. There are some decorations of Afghan pictures throughout the restaurant, and the staff is very friendly.
Their approach is to be commended, as they treat customers with a high level of respect, and have been kind enough to make some great suggestions on food choices. The management is always making sure your meal was cooked to your liking, and how can you not enjoy flame cooked lamb or chicken kabobs? My personal favorite is the boneless chicken, which is the orange color, that is associated with kabobs from Afghanistan. This is due to the yogurt and marinade basted into the pieces of chicken, and to get these kabobs off their grill is a true delight. The chicken is moist, and practically melts in your mouth, even though it is cooked well done. The appearance of the chicken with the char marks is excellent, and I love the sides that come with it.
You've got to try their chickpeas. They are fantastic, and have a bit of spice to them. The spices in the chickpeas won't overwhelm your taste buds, but it will wake them up. The brown rice mixed with the chickpeas is a great way to eat these delicious treats, and the house salad cools you down after this. I also like how their Nan bread is cooked just right. It has a bit of sogginess to it, but not so much that it becomes a mushy style of mess. A lot of places undercook or overcook the Nan, but King Kabob's is done just right everytime. You can get a side of it for $1 extra if one isn't enough, but I've yet to need more than one.
The lamb kabobs are good as well, but it is a bit dry. They also have a bit of extra fat to them, which gives them more flavor, but I prefer the chicken more. Just like the chicken used, all meat here is halal, ie. prayed over. I'd go with the chicken kabobs, but if you are a fan of beef, they have that as well. I think this is a good middle of the road pick, as the beef is cooked appropriately, and has a bit of spicy texture to it. Whether you eat the meat inside the bread, or outside of it like I do, you are sure to enjoy it. The only problem that I've had is that the quality is perfect, but they don't seem too generous with it. You aren't going to get stuffed here, unlike some other kabob places, so I'm hoping in the future they will reconsider their portion sizes.
The prices are very reasonable here. The boneless chicken kabob and beef are $8.99, with the lamb costing $1.00 extra. That's hard to beat for a combination price, and it makes this restaurant friendly for those on tight budgets. They also have chicken sandwiches for $5.99, that are decent enough, and kids chairs for those with little ones. The drinks are bottled water and fountain style sodas, and they are $1. You can find King Kabob at 10250 Main Street in Fairfax, VA in the 22030 zipcode. The restaurant is located in the Main Street Marketplace Strip Mall, and you can see them online at http://www.king-kabob.com. They are open from 11 am -9 pm Monday through Saturday, and from 11am-7 pm on Sundays. Its worth a try, and if you like kabobs, be sure to eat there.
