Pros:Mostly healthy ingredients, Chondroitin and Glucosamine, no by-products!
Cons:brewer's yeast, dried beet pulp
The Bottom Line: Higher quality dog food food at a very reasonable price - something rare these days.
In the past, pet owners had a tough decision to make. "Should I spend lots of money for my dog's food with the healthier ingredients or should I just feed them the lower quality food and hope for the best?" We're living in uncertain financial times and some people skimp on the quality of their pet's nutrition because they just don't have $45-50 per bag - especially in multiple large dog homes.

Well those days are over. You can now afford better quality pet food. Costco sells a healthy lineup of dry and canned dog food that provides your K9 companions with quality nutrition at the lower-grade food prices. Forty pound bags range between $21 and $25 depending on the formula. This Chicken & Rice formula runs $22.99. Costco sells its "house brand" of things under the name Kirkland who, in turn, buys its products from other companies. In this case, Costco buys its pet foods from Diamond Pet Foods.
While comparing the Chicken & Rice Formula to their Lamb & Rice Formula, the ingredients are quite similar but the Chicken formula has a very slight edge if you look at the "guaranteed analysis" section. Yet unlike the "Healthy Weight Formula" that does NOT include potassium chloride in the ingredients, both the Chicken and Lamb formulas do include it.
Many times, we'll mix a bag of the chicken and a bag of the lamb into our dog food storage container. I mean, in essence, the lamb and chicken dry food formulas are basically identical to their lamb & chicken canned food and their lamb and chicken biscuits. So we've accessorized our dog's food and treats well with consistency. Whether you decide to mix in a can of the "wet" food (or not) adding warm water to the bowl seems to entice our German Shepherds even more.
chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and vitamin E), egg product, dried beet pulp, potatoes, fish meal, flaxseed, natural flavor, brewers dried yeast, millet, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, carrots, peas, kelp, apples, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, dried chicory root, glucosamine hydrochloride, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, chondroitin sulfate, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, niacin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.
It should be mentioned that brewer's yeast can cause intestinal issues and dried beet pulp is like sugar to dogs and causes hyperactivity and/or leads to Diabetes over time.

If not for the potassium chloride, this would be a really great food option. On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate this formula a solid 8. Yes, there are better options, but they come with much higher price tags. So this is a really cost-effective option. So, on the Epinions scale, I rate this dog food a 4.5 out of 5 stars and rounded down due to the potassium chloride content.
While most of the Kirkland dry dog food comes in 40 pound bags, there is a 20 pound bag for people with small dogs. There's also a "puppy formula" available.
Please show your pets all the love and affection you have each day because you never know when their time on Earth is up.
