| cmaw63's Full Review: Karin Slaughter - Kisscut |
Do you know what goes on in your town? Do you know your neighbors? There may be more going on behind closed doors than you think. Karin Slaughter delivers a fast paced, and disturbing, story with a twist in Kisscut.
The Story
Dr. Sara Linton, pediatrician and medical examiner, is waiting for her ex-husband, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, to show for their skating rink date. Shortly after he arrives, a fetus is found in the bathroom and Chief Tolliver is forced to shoot a teenage girl. It is just the tip of the iceberg.
What unfolds in their small town includes a highly sophisticated child pornography ring and more death.
Detective Lena Adams, recovering from her own abduction and rape, plunges into the middle of the investigation only to find herself drawn to one of the older teenage boys. Is it sexual or the understanding of what each has been through?
While Sara and Jeffrey try to patch their broken relationship, they try to save the children of their town.
My Thoughts
Karin Slaughter is an author that holds nothing back. Topics that are delicate, yet need to be discussed, are often the theme of her books. Graphic, disturbing scenarios sometimes leave nothing to the imagination. These are the things that draw me into the story. Her books make me feel a variety of emotions. Disgust, sympathy, anger, and happiness. Whenever a book can make me feel more than boredom I consider it, at the least, a good book. Kisscut borders on great, but doesn't quit reach it.
The main characters are interesting and I can sympathize with them. Yet, their personal relationships are a mess and I think if Kisscut dealt less with that and focused on the main storyline this book would have passed my personal great book test. The abrupt ending, that appears to leave it open for another book, was the second thing that kept it from being a 5 star rating.
Kisscut has parts that reference back to previous books that included police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, Dr. Sara Linton, Lena, and the others. While not necessary to read them to keep up with this book, it does enhance the story.
Kisscut is a book that deals with death, child molestation, pornography, and more. It is not for those easily offended, but for someone who wants a good story that doesn't soften the blows...Kisscut will keep you turning the pages.
Kisscut, as used in this book, refers to making a light cut in a photograph to take out a part of it while not damaging the backing. Such as, taking a photo of two people and making a kisscut to remove one of the subjects from the picture.
