brianp55's Full Review: KitchenAid JAVASTUDIO™ KCM534 14-Cup Coffee Make...
Several weeks ago, I purchased an Empire Red KCM534 from Lowes as a replacement for a KitchenAid KCM515, which delivered a small volume of tepid coffee in its stainless steel carafe and had overflowed on to my counter top one too many times. Given that, you're probably wondering why I elected to purchase yet another KitchenAid coffeemaker. The answer is simple. I needed a RED coffeemaker to match our kitchen motif and KitchenAid has the most attractive designs in that color. Beyond that, it has a cavernous 14-cup glass carafe, a large, easy-to-read LCD and a hot plate which shuts itself off after two hours. The KCM534 also has a series of red lights which inform you of the amount of time that has elapsed since the coffee has brewed. I regard this feature as interesting, but not terribly useful. To date, this coffeemaker has worked consistently well, delivering many pots of hot coffee in sufficient volume to satisfy our requirements. I should also mention that it is a handsome unit which definitely adds an element of panache to our kitchen. Compared to the KCM515, the new carafe lid has a completely different design, which appears to present a far less circuitous path for the coffee to travel enroute from the brewing basket to the carafe. I've also noticed that the spring-loaded arm on the underside of the basket seems to be far more compliant. Either alone or in combination, my sense is that these features will correct the precariousness of the KCM515 design and avoid overflowing. Pouring water into the KCM534 requires a bit of finesse, but is certainly not difficult. The only design flaw that I have noticed is that the plastic lid on the carafe has no snap or other mechanism to hold it against the carafe when pouring. On occasion, the lid will abruptly swing away from the carafe, blocking the view of the vessel that you're attempting to pour coffee into in a manner that is momentarily alarming as you instinctively sense that the coffee is about to erupt uncontrollably from the carafe. Of course, this does not occur.
