Pros: Best ice cream maker under $500 assuming you own the mixer.

This ice cream maker features a bowl that will fit any mixer. It has 2 side holes and a different sized pins in the front and back to fit any mixer.

The dasher also does not attach directly to the mixer head. There is a hub that attaches to your mixer head, then that attaches to the paddle (dasher). If it was one piece and the ice cream solidified and jammed the paddle from spinning, the mixer would force and be damaged. Since it is a 2 piece if it gets too thick to spin the dasher will ratchet and prevent mixer damage.

The bowl pops into the freezer so no ice and salt are required. The chilled mix is added and 20 minutes later at speed 1 you have ice cream.

It works flawlessly. 25 minutes as recommended is plenty to make the ice cream. Of course you have to scoop it into a container and ripen it in the freezer for several hours to harden. But then again even a $15,000 commercial ice cream maker only makes soft serve that also has to be ripened in the freezer.

I am a professional cook and an ice cream connoisseur. This attachment will make 2 quarts nearly as good as any $500+ electric compressor machine. It also makes ice cream nearly as good as a big commercial Italian machine costing over $5000. I highly recommend this attchment for home use if you already own a Kitchenaid mixer.

My only gripes are the price. For a plastic bowl and beater it is pricey. But on the other hand, as long as you own a mixer this ice cream maker will last. There is no motor or compressor to break. When your mixer fails buy a new one...but your ice cream maker attachment is forever.

My other gripe is the fact that you can add the mix directly to the bowl then attach the bowl to the mixer. This is because the mix will solidify, jam the dasher, and you wont be able to mix the ice cream. Instead you have to start the mixer at speed 1, then pour the mix in. This can be difficult and some mix will land on top of the dasher. I just stop the mixer briefly and scrape the bit off the top of the dasher.

Because of this you must chill your mix in a big pourable container. I used an 8 cup pyrex measuring cup which worked great.

Overall if your thinking of an ice cream maker under $150 that requires ice and salt forget it. It's a pain to add the ice and salt and also drain it. If your thinking of an electric mixer with a freezable bowl forget it. This electric motor can fail then you have to chuck it. The Kitchenaid has the freezable bowl, but no motor to fail. It's all dependent on your mixer.

I think this is the best ice cream maker under $500 on the market. That is of course if you already own a Kitchenaid mixer. If not it's not worth buying the mixer just for this. You would be better off putting $500 into a real ice cream maker.
