Sliding Cookies with Ease off These KitchenAid Cookie Sheets
Written: Mar 03 '06
As I write this, I am baking Oatmeal Chocolate-Chip cookies in the oven. I cant wait to taste them! To bake these treats, I am using two KitchenAid Slider Cookie Sheets. As you tell from the product illustration, these cookie sheets dont look like the typical cookie sheet our grandmothers used.
Description
These KitchenAid Cookie Sheets are non-stick and designed for use with metal utensils. They are constructed from heavy-gauge 1.0mm carbon steel. The heavier metal allows for even heat distribution. KitchenAid says these pans will never warp.
I purchased a 2-pack of these cookie sheets. One sheet measures 15" long x 9" wide, and the other 17" long x 10" wide (Note that KitchenAid is using the interior measurements of the pans). These cookie sheets have wide rims, so the full-size pans measure: 17 3/4" long x 10 3/4" wide and 20 1/4" long x 12 1/4" wide.
A unique feature of these pans is that one end is flattened to resemble a slide. Hence the description slider cookie sheets. The end with the slide has no rim to hold the contents within the confines of the pan.
They are also dishwasher safe. The instructions say, This bakeware is truly dishwasher safe, which retains its superior food release after hundreds of oven baking and dishwasher cycles.
My Experiences
It took me so long to measure the pans and fuss with my words in the above section that the cookies are out of the oven ... and (ahem) one is in my tummy. Well, it takes fuel to write these reviews. Maybe I should eat another cookie before continuing.
The cookie recipe I used said not to grease the cookie sheets. Okay, these cookie sheets have a non-stick surface, so Im fine with that instruction. The dough easily plopped onto the pans and stayed in place. Into the oven they went. I have a double oven, so I placed the smaller cookie sheet in the top oven and the larger sheet in the bottom oven.
I knew from experience that these cookie sheets become very hot in the oven. Because they absorb heat so well, I use the lowest baking time on the instructions. These pans bake evenly so that all the cookies are perfectly done.
Removing the pans from the oven is easy since the pans have wide rims on three of the sides (the fourth side having the slider edge). However, since the pans are so hot, I make sure to use a thick potholder. I burned myself once using a potholder that didnt offer enough insulation against the heat.
My one disappointment is that I fell for the illustration on the packaging that shows the cookies sliding right off the pan. Just like a child on a slide ... whoooosh! Not so for the cookies. No matter how I tip these pans, the cookies do not slide off the cookie sheet. I even tried letting the cookies cool on the sheets to see if they would slide. They didnt. (And my ages-long-ago Home Ec teacher would have cringed since she drummed into me that cookies will keep cooking on a warm cookie sheet.)
The only way my cookies slide off these cookie sheets is with a bit of persuasion. I always use a nylon spatula. I know that metal utensils can be used with these pans, but it goes against everything in me to use a metal spatula on a non-stick surface. Taking a nylon spatula, I need to release the cookies from the sheet. Even then, they wont slide. However, they are easy to push along the pans surface. Note that the manufacturer says that even though it is okay to use metal utensils with these cookie sheets, never use a knife or any utensil with a serrated blade.
I truly enjoy having one side of these pans with the slider feature and no rim. I hate tangling with jockeying cookies, soft from baking, over the rim of a cookie sheet. The slider feature makes it easier to empty the cookie sheets of their contents.
The pans are easy to wash, too. I never place them in the dishwasher. Instead, I swish them with a soft sponge and some Dawn dishwashing liquid. They clean like a dream.
These two pans nest inside each other for compact storage. So far they look great! Acids from food could stain the pans. So far, my cookie sheets are not stained. I am using them for dedicated cookie baking. Im really pleased with them.
Purchasing
I bought this 2-pack at BJs Wholesale for $15.99. Sears online store sells this same 2-pack for $19.99. At Kohls, the 17" cookie sheet alone regularly retails for $14.99.
Summary
Im delighted with these KitchenAid Slider Cookie Sheets. I just wish the cookies would magically slide off the sheets like they do in the illustration. The cookie sheets bake well, though, with even heat distribution and are simple to clean. Best yet, these cookies taste great!
