The completely all-purpose Kitchen Aid mixer has many attachments that you can purchase. There is even a complete set of them, however my husband was just wanting a food grinder attachment and we found this one five years ago in a catalog for just under $50.
He had purchased my Kitchen Aid mixer has a gift for Christmas, and I am still using it, but now he wanted to grind deer meat, as that is what we like about having venison. It is a very lean product, and if you add no fat like the commercial processors tend to do, you have a nearly fat free product. It is really good in chile and tacos to name a few.
This food grinder is designed to use with the 4.5 and 5-qt mixers. It is easy to use. There is some minor assembly required but the directions are very complete, and it takes very little time.
The grinder fits on the front of the head of the mixer. There is a special attachment knob that just needs to be turned counterclockwise, and that is where you will insert the attachment shaft housing. It is simple to attach and remove.
There are several grinding plates, which are designed for specific purposes. The “coarse plate” is used for raw or cooked meats, cheese, and firm vegetables. The “fine plate” is designed for products such as meats that will be used for spreads or bread crumbs. We only used the coarse plate as he was grinding raw meat not for a spread.
It is recommended that you run the meat through the grinder twice, however we did it only once, and it was just fine.
There are some general safety precautions to be used while operating this product. There is a stomper that you should always use while putting food through the hopper. Keep your fingers away from appliance. Additionally keep your fingers off of the discharge area while in operation, as it is very sharp, and you could seriously injure yourself.
My only complaint with this product was that after using it for a considerable amount of time the motor on the mixer started to get hot. No doubt this continued grinding put a strain on the motor. There was some stopping and starting on our part, as this is not a commercial product and making many pounds of hamburger puts a strain on the mixer.
It was a slight mess to clean up, however since this was my husbands’ project, he had the honors. Basically rinse well, and wash in warm soapy water.
We have used this many times, at least once each deer season, and it paid for itself the first time we used it. We also had control of no additives being put in our food, which was important.
This is another excellent Kitchen Aid product, and one that continues to hold up well through time.
