Kiwi Leather Shoe Whitener is a must-have in my household as I am notoriously tough on shoes. I can wear a pair of white shoes one time, and when I get home, I have invariably scraped them on something! Grr. This product saves me every time.
~~The product:
Kiwi Leather Shoe Whitener is sold in shoe stores, mass-market stores like Target and Wal-Mart, as well as online. I got mine at a shoe store for around $4 when I bought a white pair of leather tennies. The bottle is about 5" tall, is made of hard plastic, has a round, sponge top about the size of a quarter, and is topped off with a clear plastic cap. To use, you shake the bottle with the plastic cap in place, remove cap, you turn the bottle upside down (with the sponge on the shoe), press down until the watery, white substance starts to come out, then rub over the white parts of the shoe. Let dry, and you are done. There is absolutely no polishing required as it dries to a shiny finish. The instructions say to rinse the applicator, but I usually don't and have had no troubles.
Contains an advanced polymer and whitening agent to help older shoes look like new. Designed to cover evenly without streaks or chalky residue. Distributed by Sara Lee Household and Body Care. (from packaging)
~~My experience:
I use this on leather shoes that are all white, as well as on shoes that have other colors on them.
When I use this product on my all-white tennis shoes, I remove the shoestrings, wipe the shoes with a damp cloth to get rid of any dirt, then I simply press the applicator to the shoe until I see that the sponge is becoming white (which means the product is coming out of the bottle), then rub the sponge all over the leather, including any stitching. Despite the fact that the product is of a runny consistency, I've never had it run down or cause a mess. (I don't squeeze the bottle to dispense...I let gravity do that for me.) I then place my shoes on a solid surface and let dry. Drying time is only a few minutes. If you distribute this product evenly and properly, you will not be able to tell you used anything on your shoes at all. There is absolutely no residue at all. (Note: do not use on the sides of the soles of the shoes---I've tried this and it doesn't work.) If you have any scrapes in the leather, rub the product lightly over it until the product soaks into the leather, and the scrape with become nearly invisible.
I also use this product on leather shoes that are mostly white. For example, I have a beloved pair of white athletic shoes with a saucy red swoosh. When I use the Shoe Whitener on these shoes, I rub the sponge around the red part, but cannot help but get some of the product where it doesn't belong. I simply wipe off the product where I've gotten it where it doesn't belong, and it comes right off. Note: I do this when the product is still damp.
~~Final thoughts:
This product does a wonderful job of making scuffed white shoes look new again. I do not find that it is detectable in any way once the product has dried...it is smooth to the touch, and doesn't rub off once dry. I've had this bottle for a couple of years, and still have quite a bit of product left. I would recommend this product to anyone who likes their white shoes to look white!
Although the bottom of the bottle flares out to make it more stable while sitting on a surface, be careful to use this product like you would a shoe polish...put down newspaper or a towel. I once got a little of this stuff on some carpet, and it took me forever to remove it.
Four shiny, white stars!
