yakkowarner's Full Review: Klean Kanteen 40 oz Bottle
This is a large stainless steel water bottle. It is made out of 18/8 stainless steel which gives it more durability and does not absorb flavors. The only real problem is they are expensive compared to other materials. But because I expect this to last more than a decade it really isn't that expensive over the long haul.
I own four of these. Two I bought myself and two that were gifts from the company in exchange for 2 unbiased reviews. This is one of those I bought myself and is my second favorite body and lid combo. The lid is medium in size, large enough to fit ice cubes but not too large to drink out of. I feel that is the major drawback of the wide mouth, but I know some people will like a larger opening, I'm just not one of them.
I have used different combos of bottles and I find that I like drinking out of the 27 oz, medium mouth the best. I will usually fill that 27 oz model with the water out of the 40 oz instead of using the 40 oz myself. Both 40 ounce models pour out water perfectly without spilling any water.
About BPA Read my 40 oz review for my BPA rant. But I basically bought 2 of these bottles so that I can avoid products with BPA. They range from #3, #6, and some #7 plastics. I'm just playing it safe with my kids and I an am replacing every plastic bottle we can with Stainless steel. Yes it costs more, it takes up space when empty (you can't just throw it in the trash when you're done), and but it is the best option out there for my family and I.
Cleaning It is dishwasher safe, so that is a great option. The mouth is too small for a soap wand so that is not an option.
Durability The durability is awesome. I will hit the bottle on the side of my wooden computer desk and there is no damage to the outside of the bottle (the 27oz model cannot say that). It is strong and durable. Anything short of a bat shouldn't leave a mark.
I even froze some water in my other 40oz and while it did create a bulge on the bottom, the bulge did go back to normal after a few hours. So no permanent damage there either.
This version does not have paint and that is the way I like these bottles. With the abuse I give my products, I have found that the black paint on my 27 oz chipped too easily.
Who is this for? -Someone that does not want to generate less plastic waste. -Someone that needs a lot of water for a workout. -Someone avoiding BPA
Problems The first problem is that it is not a vacuum container. If you put in ice cubes than you will expect a lot of sweat to appear on the outside. If you put in hot coffee you will run the risk of burning yourself. This is where their outer sleeves could come in handy (an extra accessory I haven't bought yet, but will). The second problem? I really have none. I like the size of the mouth. It holds plenty of water. The top creates a solid seal and does not leak. It is easy to grasp (I just prefer the 27 oz). So I am fine with this as a secondary bottle I can throw in my main backpack pouch.

Summary This is a water bottle made out of food grade stainless steel. It is fairly lightweight for the material used and durability is excellent. So if you are concerned with BPA then get this as a replacement for those types of plastics.
