My bathroom vanity needed a face lift before installing a new granite under mount sink and Price Pfister faucet so my product of choice was Klean Strip KS-3 Premium Stripper which was purchased from Walmart for around $9.
This powerful stripper removes multiple layers of latex and oil-based paints, polyurethane, epoxy, varnish and shellac from wood, metal and masonry surfaces and removes these coatings in 15 minutes or less.
Contains Methanol and Methylene Chloride. If exposed to methylene chloride, you are at increased risk of developing cancer, adverse effects on the heart, central nervous system and liver, and skin or eye irritation. Exposure may occur through inhalation, by absorption through the skin, or through contact with the skin.
How to use:
Wear gloves and chemical splash goggles. Shake can well and slowly open can to relieve pressure.
I'd removed the doors and drawers on my vanity and laid them on an old picnic table on my back porch. After pouring around 2 cups of the clear paste in an old metal bowl, I used a paint brush to spread it on the diagonal of the wood. Within a few minutes, the old paint was bubbling and it wasn't long before I could remove it with a putty knife. Actually, it practically fell off. Once the old paint was removed, I sanded the doors with my Hitachi sander. Working outside with the stripper was easy and I was quite pleased with the results.
Working inside presented a couple of problems. One, I worked in old shorts and was barefooted (my usual attire). Two, I became over confident and was rather lazy about allowing the stripper to get on my skin. It will burn and it does hurt so pay attention to all precautions. I'm still dealing with an ugly burn on my leg and wish I'd practiced safety measures strongly suggested on the can.
The bathrooms fan was running and the door was left open. It's important to work in well ventilated areas. I'm serious about this stuff, pay attention to all warnings!
After protecting my flooring with an old (hotel) curtain, I started applying the stripper to the base of the vanity. The paste does cling to vertical services without runs or drips so Klean Strips claim is right on when it comes to this. You just have to remember not to allow the paste to drop on exposed skin or get on your skin at all, and if it does land on your skin, immediately wash it off. I only rubbed mine off (I did wear gloves so my hands were protected) and I thought that was it. I thought wrong.
As for the results of the stripper on the old paint, it was excellent! It only takes around 15 minutes (or less) for the paint to bubble to such a degree you can scrape it right off. As you scrape, immediately transfer the wet strips of paint to an old Walmart bag (or whatever). Clean as you go and save yourself some extra work later on.
If you don't use all of the paste you've poured in your bowl, transfer it back to the container and clean any tools you used with soap and water. Store container in cool place. After its been opened, you can store it for 6 months, but I've noticed the can expands and needs "burping," after a few hours. This worried me so I left the opened can outside so the paste could dry out. I had no further use for it and had no intention of keeping what was left over.
May be fatal or cause blindness if swallowed. Vapor harmful. Eye and skin irritant. Contact poison control center, or emergency room, if swallowed.
In case of skin contact, irritation may result (I have a burn) so immediately wash with soap and water. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
Final recommendation and thoughts:
Klean Strip Premium Stripper does an excellent job of removing multiple layers of latex, polyurethane, varnish and shellac in 15 minutes or less. I have a healthy respect for this stuff and should you choose to use it (and I do recommend it), respect it, protect your body from the substance and harmful vapors.
