| dbonds's Full Review: Klippermate Racquet Stringer |
I bought the inexpensive Klippermate because my wife and I wanted to experiment with strings and tensions, but did not want to spend $20.00-$25.00 and cut(or break)them off two weeks later. We reviewed the pros and cons of a $135.00 and $700.00 stringer and went with the $135.00 Klippermate. If you want to make money and try and string all your buddies rackets, get a faster more expensive stringer. But for just the family, not to mention its mobility, you can't beat the little Klippermate. Do consider a few things though:
1. This stringer is a two point mounting system, meaning your racket is held down by two mounts (they make six point mounting stringers). With thin rackets, some people argue that it allows to much distortion to the racket during stringing (puts it through a lot of stress). We both use wide bodies and could care less. Research the matter further if you use thin rackets.
2. The drop tension method of setting tension is said to be less accurate than other more expensive methods. I would agree if I were Pistol Pete, but 5.0 and down should not be concerned. Actually I've learned that if you get that bar level and quickly clamp (leaving the string under tension while you get a drink stretches it and ruins consistent tension) you can get a good tension job. It's plenty good enough for me. Besides, that guy stringing your racket, is he certified or someone who was shown at the store by someone else who was shown?
3. It takes me 35 minutes to do an oversize racket with this stringer. I've been told you could do one in 20 minutes on a $700.00+ stringer. If you are stringing everyone's racket and 15 minutes is that important, by all means buy an expensive one.
Good luck on your choice and be sure to research the internet on tips for stringing. I learn something new everyday that helps me do a better job.
