Pros:easy to use, variety of hat styles can be created, includes everything but yarn
Cons:some of the pegs were loose (but I was able to tighten them)
The Bottom Line:
The Knifty Knitter Adult Hat Loom offers a quick, simple way to create knitted hats and other projects. No knitting experience required.
I inherited bins and bins of yarn when my mother passed away. Unlike my talented mother who could knit just about anything, I am fumble fingered when it comes to knitting needles. I am so glad I discovered the Knifty Knitter Adult Hat Loom. Talk about easy!

The Knifty Knitter Adult Hat Loom comes in a clear poly-bag with handles. The bag contains one purple plastic Knifty Knitter circular loom (with 48 pegs), one knitting hook/pick, a plastic yarn sewing needle, and an instruction pamphlet. It is manufactured by Provo Craft.
This particular loom has pegs that are more closely fitted together for a tighter knit. It is designed to use with medium-weight yarn.
Knifty Knitter took a shortcut regarding the instruction pamphlet that came with the loom. The instructions (in four languages) refer to the circular multi-loom set that contains four different size looms. However, the basic usage instructions are universal to any of the sizes of Knifty Knitter circular looms. The instructions cover how to make a hat with a brim, and only that one hat style. No other projects are included.
I was determined to find a way to use the yarn I inherited, and I admit, it’s a way to stay connected to my mother, who passed away. She loved to knit and crochet (taught herself and later taught others … but I never could knit straight). I would drop stitches so that my squares resembled lopsided triangles. In my search for an easier way to knit, I discovered Knifty Knitter Looms. I love them.
This particular Knifty Knitter Loom is circular and designed to make adult-size knitted hats. Other size Knifty Knitter circular looms are available, which can make a variety of hat sizes, including those for children. This purple loom is a “one-size fits most” for adults.
The instruction pamphlet that comes with the loom is easy to follow and illustrated. If you are like me when it comes to this type of crafting, it helps to have a personal demonstration of how to wrap the yarn around the pegs, begin and end projects. I found “You Tube” videos immensely helpful when I first started using the loom. I visited “You Tube” and typed in Knifty Knitter, and a variety of tutorials popped up in the search results. I watched several of them before beginning my first project.
The circular loom is constructed from plastic. The circle has 48 upright pegs, and each peg is wider at the top to hold the yarn on the peg (picture a capital letter T, except the top is rounded). The basic weaving stitch is called an “e-wrap” because the way it is looped around the pegs is similar to writing the small letter “e”. To start, tie the end of the yarn around the peg extending from the side of the circular loom (this is later untied and woven into the hat). Begin to e-wrap the yarn once around each upright peg until all the pegs are wrapped. Then wrap the pegs a second time, so that two strands of yarn are on each peg. Using the provided hook, lift the bottom strand of yarn over the top of the peg so that one strand of yarn remains on the peg. Do this for every peg in the circle. Once all the pegs have one strand of yarn on them, take the yarn and e-wrap each peg again so that there are two strands of yarn on each peg. Again, use the hook to lift the bottom strand of yarn over the peg, leaving the peg with one strand of yarn. Keep working in this fashion until your hat is the length you wish. Then thread the plastic sewing needle with matching yarn and weave the yarn through the remaining loops on the pegs; this piece of yarn acts as a way to gather the top of the hat. When the top of the hat is gathered, tie the two strands of gathering yarn together in a knot. I find that sometimes a small hole is visible at the very top of the hat where it is gathered. Some people solve this by making a matching pom-pom or tassel for the top of the hat. I use matching yarn to sew the hole closed (a few stitches) and knot the yarn on the inside of the hat.
You can make hats without brims or with brims, use different yarns for color variations and interesting textures, create stripes or add beadwork. The instructions include basic hat patterns, but there are a lot of free patterns available on the internet (search using something like: Knifty Knitter Free Hat Pattern). The e-wrap stitch is the first basic stitch learned, but there are plenty of different knitting stitches loom users have developed and shared such as purl, cable, single- and double-ribbed.
I use medium worsted weight acrylic yarn. My yarn stash includes a variety of yarn brands, and so far all of them have worked well. For a thicker, tighter knit, I select two skeins of yarn (often different but complimentary colors) and use both strands of yarn as if they were one strand of yarn. (Example: I just finished a hat in two shades of purple, a darker hue and a lighter lavender color. Holding both strands of yarn, I e-wrapped all the pegs once, and then wrapped them a second time. Each peg is holding four strands of yarn at this point. Using the hook, I lift the bottom two strands of yarn over the top of peg. This leaves the remaining two strands of yarn on the peg. By utilizing two different color yarns, it creates a customized variegated look.)
If you grow tired of knitting hats, this loom can be used for other projects, such as knitting scarves. To knit a scarf, not all the pegs are used, only about half the loom. Options include making a flat panel scarf or a tube scarf (though this size circular loom will make a large diameter tube). Tutorials are available online (use a search term like: round loom to make scarf).
This loom makes a fun, easy crafting project while I am watching television. I can create a basic hat in a few nights. My favorite hat pattern starts by knitting 18 rows for the brim (fold the 18 row section in half) and then continue knitting for another 20 rows before gathering the top of the hat to finish it. The loom is easy to work with and my hands don’t feel stressed.
I bought my Knifty Knitter Adult Hat Loom at Joann Fabric. It regularly sells for $9.99, but I had a 50-percent off coupon.
If like me you are looking for an easy way to create knitted hats, then check out this Knifty Knitter Adult Hat Loom. I’ve knitted quite a few hats now, and am very pleased with the results.
You are probably wondering where all these hats are going. There are only so many gifts for friends and relatives to make and hats I can wear! I am knitting these hats for those in need of warm clothing during cold weather. There are several organizations specializing in providing cold-weather clothing to those in need. I’m sure my mother would be pleased.
