Yes, human hair can be used, but it will be harsher as it is hair-like (obviously) and not wool-like. Bear in mind that it will take a lot of fibre to make enough yarn for a knitted or crocheted article.

Human hair used to be made into bracelets and watch chains by young women for their beloved. It requires less fibre for this type of article.

Good luck

I just attended a sheep shearing (yes, my little son and I are just that high class, let me tell you, lol!) and saw how they spun. That's so neat! My roommate has a Newfoundland, and it would be fun to make her a hat. Do you know if human hair works? I think it would be lovely to mortify my mother with a hat made of me, hee hee!

My very creative daughter-in-law just said last weekend that her Border Collie sheds so much she is going to make a coat out of the fur. I certainly forwarded your review to her. Thanks so much for sharing your hobby with us =) Excellent!

Good work. This review was interesting, and it has me wondering if you've tried it with your dog's hair.

And dog hair really does make good yarn. I have a friend who used to breed and show Great Pyrenees dogs; she has beautiful scarves, hats, sweaters made from their hair. It is very soft, does not smell, and is very strong.

Thanks for a great review -- Kristin

Years ago I knew a woman who had knitted a number of sweaters with hair from her Samoyed dog. They were very nice looking, and although I was interested in trying this....at the time I owned a Chihuahua. Bummer! Pat

I too wondered if this was possible and never knew there was a book about it. Spike would look so cute on me...so to speak. Nice job of reviewing the book AND explaining the procedure too.

we had a housekeeper come to stay with us when my parents went on business trips. She owned a beautiful charcoal grey coat, which was made from the clipped hair of her poodles.

Nice review! Let me know how your project comes out... Abbie

you were kidding. Then I read on and saw you were serious. I guess I fit into the con category of friends and neighbors who are horrified by the idea.

At any rate it was an excellent review.

This is one of the most facinating things I've heard of in a long time. Sounds like a great gift for the animal lover that has everything!

Thanks for the write up. Great job!

Actually, you can do human hair - it would just have to be of the right coarseness, or blended with a more coarse fibre.

redwolfoz - Very cool stuff, I say! :)

I love my drop-spindles!!! Although, it would be nice to finally get a spinning wheel because I am trying to build myself a warp-weighted loom...

Blah blah blah.... :) Great review!!!!

on the meaning of a "three dog night". I guess I could make a blanket (instead of putting the dog's hair out for the birds to make nests with) and on cold nights I could sleep with the dogs AND keep them out in the yard at the same time. hehehe

Another great review red.

Well, this is certainly the oddest review I've read today. I've knit quite a few sweaters in my time, but no dog sweaters. I wonder if human hair would work well too.

Make sure it's dry, then bundle it up in paper bags and store it somewhere safe.

You could always try getting a copy of this book for your Mum. At least she'll know there are people out there mad enough to do this for a hobby.

I've been trying to convince my mom for several years to let me try to turn my dog's hair into yarn, but every time I accumulate almost enough to make something out of she confiscates it and disposes of it! Argh! We have a dog, but the prospect of wearing her fur still horrifies my mom!
