Pros: Easy to install, can be set up the way you want, durable.
Cons: More expensive than pegboard hooks, less than other rail systems.
Kobalt is the Lowe's Home Improvement brand. Kobalt makes an organizing system called the Kobalt K-Rail, which is a long, hard plastic rail that mounts to your wall with wood screws. The rails can be easily cut to size with a saw for shorter spaces or mounted side-by-side for longer walls. The rails come in 50 inch sections that retail for seven to eight dollars per section. Similar rails from other companies run twice that price. Organizing attachments slide over the plastic rail where they can be positioned anywhere along the rail for a wide variety of tools and equipment. The durable rails can hold seventy-five pounds per linear foot.
The Kobalt J-Hook is the least expensive of the attachments for the K-Rail. Each hook runs $1.98 at Lowes. I also use pegboard for many of my smaller tools. Accessories packets can be purchased for ten to fifteen dollars for fifty pieces for pegboard. That works out to about a quarter per piece. However, these pegboard attachments will not hold much weight. The pegs themselves are thin and excessive weight on the pegboard will cause it to split. The Kobalt J-Hook is a durable hook mounted to a beefy metal backing.
The hook is a hair under two inches in height by an inch and a half wide. You could line as many as thirty of these hooks up on a single run of K-Rail if you wanted a simple hook system for heavier tools. The heavy gauge metal will not easily bend. The hook portion is coated with a thick, rubberized coating that will add some protection to whatever is hanging from it. While these hooks are comparatively expensive, they do the job.
Setting this system up is fairly easy. If you are hanging heavy equipment (like ladders, etc) you want to make sure you are screwing the rail to a stud. After marking the wall, mark the K-Rail to match and drill pilot holes for your screws. The screws will go through without the pilot holes, but this material is very slick and heavy duty. It will save a lot of headache if you have pilot holes drilled. Line the rail back up with the studs and fasten it to the wall with Kobalt Screws. The rail will have a sturdy foundation. You can then mix and match your attachments by simply sliding them over the rail. If you are working close to a corner, be sure you allow yourself enough room to slide the attachments you intend to use onto the rail. The slide from the side, so you need to allow at least the width of the largest attachment. However, the packaging indicates you can snap them into place. I prefer to slide them.
I cut a piece of K-Rail to fit in my garage next to the entrance into my house. I placed eight Kobalt J-Hooks on this section of railing which is now an industrial coat rack. Is it overkill? Not really. I can hang whatever I like on those hooks. When the kids come in from the swimming pool, they can hang their towels to dry. It is convenient and matches the rest of the rails I have mounted in my garage. A coat rack would have cost twenty dollars for less hooks. For about the same money, I have matched the rest of my garage. I also use the J-Hooks on my longer rails for smaller items. The work nice for squeezing in items on a rail filled with large objects (like my ladder).
I like my Kobalt K-Rail system. The Kobalt J-Hooks are the least expensive of the attachments but are also the least useful. They are great for smaller items but the inch long hook would be difficult for hanging something like a ladder or leaf blower. You could do it...it would support the weight. But you run the risk of the item falling from the smaller hook and damaging your car. I use these small hooks for smaller items, which is what they were designed for. If you have large tools with a hook hole, it is a good fit. My smaller tools go on the peg board, which makes more sense. Kobalt makes an affordable, durable organizing system that is easy to tailor to your specific needs. Kobalt offers a lifetime replacement guarantee. The J-Hook gets four stars.
