Kodak's Top of the Line APS Camera delivers
Written: Mar 20, 2000
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Feature rich. Great photo quality.
Cons:Photo's are not 100% 35mm quality (about 99%)
I bought my 5800 based on a review from Compare.net and I must say, they were fairly dead on. This is the most feature rich APS camera made by Kodak and it has great photo quality to rival a traditional 35mm.
First the features. This camera comes with a strong 26mm to 130mm zoom which is more than most regular point and shoots. A flip up flash ensures that your finger is never on the flash and it reduces red eye. Your standard time/date stamping is included plus roll and print titling (a little cumbersome to do). A nice LCD in the back makes viewing the vital stats of your camera a snap, like flash modes and # of exposures left. The APS features include mid roll changing (awesome!) and three picture sizes on the same roll (regular, panoramic, and HD which is in between the two). Probably the coolest feature is the remote control which eliminates the click and run approach to taking group photos. The vendor I bought from included 2 rolls of film a nifty three pronged tripod. I also got a nice leather/vinyl (can't tell) case and strap.
Regarding picture quality, I have to say they came out very nice. Unless you have a very very very discriminating eye, you cannot tell the difference between APS and 35mm photos. I love the HD size photos because they are slightly larger than 4x6 but not too big.
Overall, this is probably the best camera I've had to date. The price was not outrageous given other cameras that compete with this one. The street price is around $300-$325 and you can always be on the watch for a great website deal that will allow you to take about 10%-20% off that price.
