godzthunder's Full Review: Kodak EASYSHARE 5100 All-In-One Printer
***UPDATE*** Jan 2009: In nearly a year of use I have to say that I have replaced the ink two times (I use the printer very heavily) with each replacement (both color and black) costing under $25.00 to replace. This printer is very cost efficient saving money on refilling ink, having cheap ink AND going through the ink very slowly. This is deffinately a good buy! I have read the reviews on the easyshare 5100. all the people who have been able to use the AIO (All-In-One, this means that it prints, copies and scans) have high remarks and reviews about the device. (I myself love this device). It gives cheap printing with a mid to high quality. I love the fact that eighteen dolars will buy me both new color and black ink AND that ink will actually last more than double the standard print average from all competitors.
THE PROBLEM that everyone giving this device a bad rap is that it is not the easiest thing to install. There are some steps involved and the difficulty is so much an issue that Kodak has thrown in a sheet of paper with the printer that has a large stop sign saying STOP!!! Don't send the device back to the store, call us first (and a 1 800 number is supplied). I suggest that if you cannot get your printer, which is not difficult if you follow the directions ( I SAID IT IS NOT DIFFICULT IF YOU READ AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS, WHICH COME WITH PICTURES!!!) call these people and they will happily help you and releive you of you headache.
In my opnion, a small setup workout is WELL WORTH the money you will save on ink costs.
Now with that said, let me review this device. As a scanner this device is wonderful. it quickly scans my work and translates it to workable prints in under a minute. this is pretty impressive for an ink jet printer and I highly reccomend the device. The prints of scanned documents are detailed though a little grainy, you will notice a small glitch in detail but nowhere near enough to compalin (unless you are adrian monk lol). I have not timed the prints but they are pretty consistant and fast for an ink jet. you will get a good quality and good quantity in your copies and scans.
The printer does both paper and photo prints. the photo printer saves you a fortune in overall costs and makes decent photos (if you want high high high quality you need a standalone photo printer or you need to take your pictures in to be developed). I have seen many printers turn out many pictures and the easyshare gives all of the a decent run for their money in quality and blows all of the competition out of the water in terms of cost. you can also adjust the quality of your printing (though higher quality will result in more ink usage per photo) but even then, you will get a great photo for a decent per photo price.
All in all, this printer is truly worth owning, after you learn that you need the latest version of apple quicktime and that you need to follow the instructions step by step (not difficult at all) you will find this printer will become your favorite toy and will save you a ton of money, money that you can now spend on gas for your car ;)
