psaubunch's Full Review: Kodak EASYSHARE 5100 All-In-One Printer
I bought my Kodak Easy Share 5100 in February of 2009. I just recently ran out of color ink. Of course, now it won't even print a black and white document. When I contact Kodak support online, they tell me that it won't print unless there is ink in both cartridges. I thought, what a rip-off. Ok, fine, so I purchase some online and I figure while I'm waiting for it to ship to me I'll scan and play around with some pictures so they'll be ready to print when the ink gets here. Guess again! If you are out of ink in one cartridge it will display an ERROR message if you try to do anything with the printer. It won't even SCAN a picture. So, I contact Kodak support online again to see what is going on. Never had a problem like this from any of my numerous past printers. Here is how our "online chat" went:
Polly X (5:54:40 PM) : I own a Kodak Easy Share 5100 all in 1 printer. When I try to scan a picture to an application or a file it gives me the message, "An error has aborted your scanning session. Error code 1 - 2006". What can I do to fix this. (5:54:40 PM) [An agent will be with you shortly.] (5:55:36 PM) [You are now chatting with Akhilesh K .] Akhilesh K (5:55:41 PM) : Welcome to Kodak, my name is Akhilesh. Please wait while I review your question. Akhilesh K (5:57:41 PM) : If I understand correctly, you are not able to scan from your Kodak Easy Share 5100 All-in-One printer as it shows error 1-2006. Is it correct? Polly X (5:58:03 PM) : yes Akhilesh K (5:58:51 PM): Don’t worry. I’ll try to help you with the issues with your Kodak All in One Printer.
Akhilesh K (6:00:46 PM) : Have you tried copying a document from your Kodak Easy Share 5100 All-in-One printer? Polly X (6:08:07 PM) : It won't "copy" because I am out of color ink, so it won't print, and will probably not "copy" either. Akhilesh K (6:09:06 PM) : Ok. Akhilesh K (6:09:36 PM) : If your printer is out of ink, it may not allow you to use any feature on the printer including scanning or copying or printing. Polly X (6:10:02 PM) : That's a rip off. Akhilesh K (6:10:06 PM): Your printer is under an error due to lack of color ink. In order to use any function or feature on your printer, it need to be free from any error. Akhilesh K (6:10:21 PM) : All in one printers need very little amount of ink for self maintenance. If the ink cartridge is out of ink, the printer won’t be able to perform maintenance. To avoid any damage to the printer, it comes with error and stops functioning. Polly X (6:10:25 PM) : What do I need to do to contact someone for complaints? Polly X (6:11:08 PM) : I understand what you are saying, but scanning has absolutely nothing to do with printing. Akhilesh K (6:13:11 PM) : Polly, even if your printer is powered on, it need to perform regular maintainence. If the ink cartridges are out of ink, priter may get damaged during any function as it won't be able to perform regular maintainence. Polly X (6:13:52 PM) : I understand what you are saying, but I still want a number to call for complaints about the product. Akhilesh K (6:14:51 PM) : You may call Kodak phone tech support at 1-800-421-6699 between 9 am EST till midnight EST, 7 days a week. Polly X (6:15:08 PM) : Thank you very much .Akhilesh K (6:15:21 PM) : Thank you. Is there any other support I may provide you with today? *** Newest Message *** Polly X (6:15:37 PM) : I understand you didn't make the product, I have no complaints with you. Have a good weekend.

So I call the 1-800 number and speak with someone from India or there abouts and is politely told that there's nothing they can do about it and they'll pass along my idea of a patch to download to fix this "problem". I know nothing will become of that, if it does I'll eat my email. Would have been nice to get a "coupon code" for free shipping or $$ off my next order. They make sure NOT to tell you any of this before you purchase the printer So, pretty much, they keep you tied to an "INK LEASH". I think that's pretty lame. Had I known ahead of time, I probably would not have purchased it.
