The Kong Squirrel is a soft, almost plush cat toy that has a velcro opening in the belly to stuff with a catnip pouch. It has a fluffy tail and two felt ears, but no eyes or nose or any other feature that could choke the cat or get tangled. I bought this toy for about $5.00 as a Christmas present for my cats. My wife put the catnip pouch inside the squirrel and wrapped it in paper. As soon as the cats investigated it, they pawed at it and tried to get the paper off.
Because of the catnip, all three of my cats are naturally attracted to it and will grab it with their front paws and kick at it with their hind legs while they bite at it. As long as the catnip is fresh and fragrant, my cats find this toy fairly entertaining. It's also fun for me to watch them get all crazy with it.
Some good things about this toy are the fact that it is machine washable and the catnip pouch is in a tea bag like packet that keeps the catnip from getting everywhere.
On the downside, the squirrel only comes with 2 catnip pouches (T-Nips Catnip Packets). If the pouches aren't stored in an airtight container, they lose their quality and appeal pretty fast. I imagine you could even freeze them to keep them fresher even longer. I didn't know this until after the fact and when both packets no longer enticed my cats, they stopped paying attention to the squirrel. I think the squirrel is a little too big for cats to pat around or toss about without the catnip to lure them. My cats usually prefer smaller things that move a little easier like foam or tinsel balls.
I've looked for replacement packets, but since I live in a rural area, none of the stores nearby carry the T-Nip refill packets. I've noticed that you can buy them online for about $1.50 for six packets. It just hasn't seemed worth it if I have to pay shipping. Major pet stores like Petco and Petsmart carry the Kong brand toys and catnip refills.
