My Sadie goes 'Kongkers' when I throw her Puppy Kong filled with her favorite treats
Written: May 25, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:The PUPPY KONG has made my dog a happier puppy, and keeps her mouth healthy!
Cons:I can't think of any!
The Bottom Line: This review was how Puppy Kong made me smile, playing with my dog. Can you Help teach the world to Smile? 'Seize the Day' Pass around a Smile.
My Sadie girl is part Yorkshire terrier/part Maltese, they call this a 'Morkie'. She is one year old as of April 11, 2012, and she weighs a whole 6lbs and 10oz. She is a bundle of happiness, and smiles.
One day while I had her at the groomers, she was about 3months old, I found the most curious thing! A "PUPPY KONG" it was called. I looked at it, and it came in all sizes, and various colors. So the Groomer began to tell me about it:
What is a PUPPY KONG?:
KONG is a brand name. KONG is made in the USA
KONGS have a hollow center to stuff with tasty treats that require skill and persistence to "dig out" the treat. The treats that you insert into the hole of your PUPPY KONG can be anything from spreading peanut butter into the hole, or stuffing in her "doggie cookies".
PUPPY KONG just like an original KONG, but made of a rubber compound specially designed for puppy teeth. PUPPY KONG are much more pliable and squishy than KONGS for adult dogs, but work exactly the same way. PUPPY KONG soothes sensitive gums and promotes healthy chewing behavior.
PUPPY KONG comes in three sizes, Small3" x 1.75"Medium3.5" x 2.25"Large4" x 3. A size small is for dogs up to 20lbs. Recommended for puppies age 2 to 6 months. I am not sure what the weight is for the medium and the large. (I can't remember what they said) I got the small for Sadie!
There are a variety of KONG Stuff'n treats available for purchase (sold separately), (I have never purchased these special treats), I began with spreading peanut butter into it, and since I just use what ever "doggie cookies" we have.
I have found that if I break treats up it makes it easier to get them all inserted into the PUPPY KONG. By inserting them in various sizes such as, "big one, small one, big one, and so on", so that once she dislodges one piece there will be a smaller piece behind that which will come out easier and so forth.
How do Kong toys benefit dogs?: They help keep dogs occupied and mentally stimulated while their Pet Parents are away. This is especially great for pet parents who have to work, and leave their pet in their crate during the day.
I am a stay at home "puppy parent". For me it is about teaching my puppy, that I am not here as a constant "playmate" for my puppy. Don't get me wrong, I spend hours a day with her, and we play fetch about 6 thousand times a day, and we practice our sit, lay down, and stay, commands which we have pretty well mastered. However, come, and roll over, and don't jump and don't bark...Well...needless to say we need work! ("Raised eyebrow" SMILES)
Sadie has had her's since she was 3months old, and she still brings it to me, for me to fill it up with her treats. She delights watching me get it ready. As she watches my every move, her tail is wagging uncontrollably. Then I throw PUPPY KONG, and off she goes to get it, and down she lays with PUPPY KONG and begin working at her treats! After about an hour or so, she will jump up on to my lap and drop the Puppy Kong into my lap! (It has some "heft to it", because of being so strong to handle puppies razor sharp teeth. It could hurt you if it were thrown at any speed from any distance, so I do warn you not to be in the line of fire.) (Or especially if you have little kids, Supervision would be the key here.) (kids can be vivacious and throw lots of things for the puppy, not realizing cause and affect.)
PUPPY KONG, as do all the Kong toys, have an unpredictable bounce that really intrigues my Sadie. Her little head cocks to the side, and waits 'a half a millisecond' to be sure it isn't going to jump at her. (She is actually a big coward.) For instance if a toy lands on the floor vent where the heat comes into the room, she will NOT get that toy.. I don't know what she thinks is going to happen there..but she is pretty sure she is NOT going to find out! (wide eyed smile)
Supervise your dog's use of KONG Toys until you are confident they can be used safely without supervision. This is especially important with more avid, vicious chewers! You will know in a few minutes whether your dog is going to be able to destroy the PUPPY KONG, (It has happened probably with large dogs, but rarely.)
Sadie loves loves loves all her toys, and during the day she plays with most if not all of them, depending upon her mood. Then other times she will play with a particular few. But PUPPY KONG is right up there, as a favorite. Rarely does a day go by that she doesn't play with her PUPPY KONG! Even empty, she will throw it in the air and watch it bounce, and pick it up again and throw it. Then she will notice I am watching and prance over and drop it into my lap, then back up and wag her tail anxiously. Every once in a while after the grand kids have been here playing with Sadie, I won't be able to find PUPPY KONG. I will ask Sadie, "Where is your treat toy?" I will go around looking for it, and she will follow me with her tail wagging "anticipatingly" So after a bit if we can't find it I will just get her a regular treat, and she will be fine. But then a few days later, (once it was a week later), it showed up. Sadie was like a "dog at Christmas" she was so excited, wagging her tail and getting up on her back legs to dance delightfully. It just warms my heart to see her get excited.
As I conclude my review of PUPPY KONG, I would love to add, that my passion in life, is to see more SMILES in this world. One way to add more smiles is for people to take a moment out of your day, and stop in at a pet store, or visit someone with a pet, (unless, of course, you are allergic), and engage a few minutes of your time playing with, or watching a pet at play. If that doesn't bring a smile to your face, for at least an instant, then I would say you need 'intense' smile therapy. It has been a proved factor in the process of healing for some patients, who are 'shut ins' in a hospital, or nursing home. There have been reports of people who haven't spoken a word in years, after having a cat laid into their arms, or a dog to kiss them, that they have broken their silence. Just the simple love of the animal has brought them around. That is how very powerful love is. It is also a proved factor, that if you have high blood pressure, and you begin petting an animal, that act alone will bring your pressure down immensely. Animals have always been a healing factor in my life, as well.
Sadie, for example, came into my life, about a month after losing the love of my life, my Husband. I can tell you from experience that those long lonely nights, when everyone has gone home, and it is time for bed or time to get up, are the hardest of all. Sadie is there to snuggle with me at night, and to greet me in the morning. She has given me a purpose, and a reason to get up and get going, when before that, I had lost my purpose.
God brought Sadie into my life at just the right time to help me cope. He knows what we need and when, and His timing is always perfect. His perfect love casts out fear, and "All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28). That's the only reason I can breathe and continue breathing every day. The Bible and the people and pets He puts in my path make me smile through my pain. I love to try and make someone smile everyday.
You, too can do that, and together we can "teach the world to smile." It is very simple, It costs nothing. Please, if you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours! "Seize the Day with a Smile", and believe me your day will be better because of it. A little compassion goes a long way. "A Smile" transcends all languages, religions, and political parties.
I want to thank "bethesdalily" for hosting this "Write off" called "Carpe Diem", which simply means "Seize the Day". We have a choice as to what to "Seize this Day" with, I am going to "Seize My Day with a SMILE!"
Thank you for reading and rating my review.
Don't forget, if you see someone without a smile, Please give them one of yours. Here is one from me to you. (Big SMILES) Have a Happy Day! sara
