zoogelsnof's Full Review: Koss Porta Pro Consumer Headphones
I need to start with a small preface, I love sound, Im obsessed with it, and I listen to sound all day and all night on all different speakers and TVs and car systems. Due to my audiophile nature it is very possible there are things that would bother me in a set of headphones that most people wouldnt notice, or care about.
Real World Experience:
They just looked too funny/weird to not try on and test out =)
Testing Environment
These were tested on my Sony D-EJ2000 personal CD player.
The listening experience
As has become my virtual standard I tested this with two CDs. One was the, Dropkick Murphys a delightful rock band that enjoys screaming and breaking things, but does so in such a way as to create beautiful mosh heavy rock music. The second, just to jump as far from that as possible, was my, Rent soundtrack. I like a lot of different random music, if you havent picked up on that theme in my reviews yet =)
Sound Quality:
As sub $50 headphones go, these are about as good as it gets from my experience.
The bass is very solid, especially for an open headphone. It thumps well: the middle and high bass is strong. It does, however, sound a little fake at the very low end, but thats to be expected in a pair of headphones at this level.
The mid range is again, very solid, very pleasant, and very easy to listen to. They are very well balanced, not to loud and not to soft, they fit nicely into the system. They sound just fantastic for this price range.
The highs are the weakest part of the system, but in a, everything else is a 10, highs are a 9 kind of way. They are, by no means bad, theyre just a little faint sometimes. They sound good when theyre there, but sometimes theyre hard to hear as clearly and distinctly as Id like.
Comfort:
These are fairly comfortable considering how collapsible they are. No padding on the headband, so it might be hard on a bald person, but it was fine on my thick head of hair. The earpieces are strange, there's a second padded bit that sits higher on your head and makes these oddly comfortable. They are very foldable and moldable. The earpieces bend in, and the headband bends in, so that it makes a very nice compact package. They seem very durable, like they could be shoved in a pack without much care and come out alright on the other end.
Other Notes:
These are open headphones, and they leak a fair amount of sound, but no more so then the average open headset.
They look funny Sorry, Im a very vane man, I admit it, I simply wouldnt be seen walking around with these on my head. They simply look strange on my head. I know this is an incredibly self absorbed position, but this is coming from the same guy who doesnt wear down jackets because they make me look, poofy =)
They feature a 4-foot long cord, which is fairly short, but not excessively so. Should be long enough for devices in your pocket, but could get annoying if your CD player is your backpack or tucked away somewhere deep.
Bottom Line:
**note, these are related to price, EG, its not sound quality related to the best sound in the world, its sound quality related to the other things in this price range.**
