Cut the Caffeine in Half, but Not the Flavor

Pros:only half the caffeine as regular; nice flavor
Cons:not as smooth as regular; gets bitter as it cools
The Bottom Line: For those looking to reduce their caffeine, or to introduce just a little, Maxwell House Lite provides good flavor without the jitters. 3.5 stars.
I love coffee. But coffee, or caffeine rather, doesn't love me. Decaf is an option, but it is more expensive and doesn't taste quite as good. So finding a half-caf coffee seemed like the perfect option for me. I had picked up an 11.5 ounce canister of Maxwell House Lite awhile back, and I must say it has done the trick.

What it is
Maxwell House is a big name for coffee. This particular steel canister is blue with a clear lid and the word "LITE" on the top. It is pretty easy to distinguish between this and the regular. It is a medium roast ground coffee made from 100% Arabica beans. Now what I really like about this particular brand is what it says on the back about it being "naturally decaffeinated." I'm always concerned about the decaffeinated process coffee goes through, since sometimes they use chemicals. Granted, the term "natural" can be used loosely, and they still might use chemicals derived from natural sources, but one can hope for the best.
There's nothing like the smell of coffee brewing. Maxwell House has a lovely and strong coffee aroma that fills the air and is very pleasing to my senses. Every time I open the canister, I'm greeted by the lovely scent of ground coffee.
I like really hot coffee, and my hubby likes his tepid, which I think is gross. I either drink mine black or with milk or half and half. Maxwell House Lite is good either way. To me, though, as it cools down it takes on a bitter flavor I'm not overly fond of, but when it is piping hot it is pretty good.
I can tell a slight flavor difference between the Lite and regular, which I do drink on rare occasions. Also, there is a difference in the smoothness. It isn't quite as smooth as regular Maxwell House, but not in a big way.
I can tell there is less caffeine. A cup (even small) of regular coffee will make me shaky and jittery for hours. That's even having eaten breakfast with it. The lite however doesn't do that, unless I were to drink it on an empty stomach. Hubby drinks it when he has to go into work early, and he states it really helps him. He has a 50 minute drive, and he says having just a small amount of the coffee makes him feel much more alert for the drive. He even seems to have more energy with having just one cup of coffee. Of course, we've never been big coffee drinkers because we didn't want to get hooked on the caffeine, so the lite has more of an affect on him than perhaps someone who drinks regular coffee all of the time.
Hubby and I enjoy strong coffee. According to the directions, one serving is 1 tablespoon of grounds for six ounces of water. My tablespoons are always nicely rounded, and regardless of how many I put in, I sprinkle a little more on top. There are 80-90 suggested servings per 11.5 ounce container, so that will last an infrequent coffee drinker quite awhile.
I store my coffee in the fridge for freshness. It has stayed fresh for a long time. I don't buy coffee all that frequently, since we don't even have it every day. The seal on the lid seems to keep the grounds fresh, too.
For us, Maxwell House Lite is a good coffee. Only half the caffeine, but still enough to help one get through the morning. The flavor is nice, but not quite as smooth as regular coffee, and that bitterness it takes on as it cools isn't to my liking, but hubby doesn't mind.
I actually went out to buy more yesterday, and was disappointed that Walmart didn't carry it. I ended up purchasing a different kind, so I hope it is as good.
The price is reasonable, too. On sale you may find it for $2.50 with a regular price not much more than that, say around $3.00. I think it's a fair price.
If you like cinnamon, try sprinkling a little on top of your grounds before brewing. It infuses your coffee with a subtle cinnamon flavor that is really good.
Maxwell House is a Kraft company.
