| missy32's Full Review: Kristi Yamaguchi: Artist on Ice (The Achievers) Bo... |
My daughter Brittney had to read a book this year and do a book report so she went to the school library and brought home the book titled “ Kristi Yamaguchi”. I wasn’t surprised she picked this book to read since I know how much she just loves figure skating and watching it on TV.
Kristi Yamaguchi is a famous figure skater and this book tells of her life and her struggles.
Kristi was born on July 12 1971 in Hayward California it tells you how old she was when she first figured out she loved ice-skating. Kristi was only 5 years old when she first watched figure skater Dorothy Hamill win a gold medal in the 1976 Olympics. From that moment on Kristi wanted more then anything to be like Dorthy.
When Kristi was 6 her parents took her to the ice rink and this is when she began her career in skating, she learned to spin and jump on ice and most of all she learned what it felt like to fall and be all bruised up.
When Kristi was 9 her parents decided she should have her own skating teacher and that is just what happened. She was introduced to a lady named Christy Kjarsgaard. Kristi would work on her skating from 4:00am till 9:00am five hours of long hard practice.
In 1983 Kristi began skating with a partner, he was 13 years old his name was Rudi Galindo. At this time they both worked with the same coach his name was Jim Hulick. Now Kristi had to practice even more hard hours on the ice. Kristi didn’t have that much time to enjoy her life outside of skating. She did go to school, but after school she didn’t have time to go play with friends and just hang out instead she had to get back on the ice and practice more and more.
After long hard practice in 1985 Kristi and Rudi won a contest for junior skaters. They didn’t win first place but did take 5th in the tournament. The judge liked them so much that he invited them both to perform at the World Championships in Yugoslavia. Here they also won 5th place as a pair team.
When Kristi turned 16 she and Rudi qualified to skate in the World Championship again. This time Kristi wanted to win two titles. She skated alone in the singles and won first place and then she and Rudi won the junior title for pairs.
Those are just a few things that you will learn about this great and wonderful women and skater. There is much more about her life and dreams and accomplishments in this book. It’s very simple to read and your child will enjoy the pictures as well.
I feel this book is educational to youngsters as well. It show’s them that hard work and dreaming can pay off if you set your heart and mind to it. Don’t allow anything to get in your way of doing what you feel is right.
Kristi is a women and person that young child can look up to as a role model. She has won the hearts of many people around the world not just in America.
Author of this book is Donna Shiobhan
Publish in 1193
64 pages
Hardcover and paperback both available.
My thoughts on the book..........
The writting quality of this book is very easy and the style the author used was great for younger children to read and understand. I could actually see my daughter enjoying each page as she read the book.
The book covers the life of Kristi and all that she has accomplished and the opsticals she over came on her way to being a Olympic figure skater.
Over all this book is NOT a long book for kids to read since the total number of pages is 64, your child will breeze right through the book. I also feel this is a great book for anyone who loves to read about figure skaters and what they done to get where they are today.
