I remember reading this book when I was younger. I loved the Babysitter's Club series. This book was the first time I had heard about autism. A few years later, at 15, I started babysitting for a 3 year old child with autism. I know a couple of you mentioned 13 being too young to babysit an autistic child, but I don't know if you think 15 is too young as well. This child was actually a lot easier to watch than the other children I babysat for. He was very sweet and was easily engrossed in solo activities. I remember thinking that he was nothing like Susan from this book. He wasn't a savant. Before I met him, I thought all autistic children had those extraordinary talents. The book was kind of misleading in that way. My brother had the same misconception due to the movie Rain Man.

Also, I think at the height of popularity of these books, it was really common for 13 year olds to babysit. I remember babysitting at 13 and even for little babies. Now, my friends have children and will barely leave them with adult family members. Times have certainly changed in that respect.

I know if we could afford it, I'd sure like 6 hours a week to myself. :)

I can't fathom leaving a special needs child with a 13-year-old. That in itself seems a bit unbelievable, as does the savant stereotype. Then again, 15 years ago, that was very prevalent. I actually did my 7th grade science fair project on autism, which was virtually unheard of back then (and I won't say what year... just suffice it to say that it was pre-1990).

...though I would suggest that you try writing in proper paragraphs as opposed to sentences that are their own paragraphs. It reads too much like a "list," and is harder to enjoy as such. Just my suggestion. Good job, though. :)
