| martymar65's Full Review: Krups Crystal Arome Plus 467-71 |
This is my third Krups Crystal Arome Plus Time coffee maker, and I'm still thrilled with the features and the way the coffee tastes, but most importantly, the dependability of the machine.
The Third one you might ask? Well, the first one I purchased back in '96 and used the thing to the point that it just couldn't make another pot of coffee and I replaced it in 2002. 6 years and about 2 pots of coffee daily, I would venture to say that's an excellent track record. (It just stopped working one day.) I replaced the tired machine with another Chrystal Arome Plus Time unit and used it until I saw, in a catalog, a beautiful stainless steel Cuisinart Grind and Brew machine that I had to have, simply because it looked so great! (If you'd like to see how unhappy I was with the Cuisinart machine, read the review I wrote for it. It's long but worth the read if you're considering buying the Cuisinart.) Once I received the Cuisinart machine, I gave my neice the Krups, which she still uses to this day and is very happy with it.
I was so unhappy with the Cuisinart that I returned it and got a full refund from the Catalog company that I purchased it from. (Thanks Chef's Catalog!) I immediately replaced the Cuisinart with another, trusy old-faithful Krups.
The features of this machine are terrific. It has an internal water filter that works very similarly to name brand water pitcher filters. This may not sound like a big deal to most, but if you've tasted the coffee that this machine makes, you'll know that the filter makes an incredible difference in the taste of the coffee. The machine tells you when it needs to be cleaned and when the filter needs to be replaced. This also helps to extend the life of the heating mechanism and pump by reducing the amount of water "scale" that might come from hard water, and also takes out the chlorine smell from public water.
The coffee carafe is designed in such a way that very little steam escapes during brewing, keeping the "true" amount of water that you had originally poured into the machine in the coffee carafe, not up in steam or onto the counter. The controls are very easy to use, the machine is easy to set up to automatically brew in the morning, and you can set the amount of time the machine keeps the coffee hot from 1 to 5 hours. It also automatically turns itself off, so if you're like me and get half way to the office and think "did I turn off the coffee?", you won't have to worry any more. You can also buy a permanent gold-tone filter for it, which I would recommend doing as I haven't had to buy paper filters in years. (Nothing like running out of filters when you're trying to wake up in the morning.)
The design of the machine was very well-thought-out before it was manufactured. The controls are easy to see and use and are placed directly in the front of the machine. The heating mechanism brews the coffee to the best temperature ever, and the pump is quiet, quick and doesn't gurgle and make excessive noise at the end of the brewing cycle either.
After much trial and tribulation, and after being swayed over to a seemingly "pretty" stainless steel coffee maker from Cuisinart, I came back to Krups and will continue to use their products faithfully.
