An economical coffee maker at a great price!

Written: Jun 26 '01 (Updated Jun 26 '01)
Pros:Makes fine coffee and is very affordable.
Cons:Not a lot of features on it. (Perhaps that's less that can go wrong.)
The Bottom Line: It's a great coffee maker at an affordable price from a name you can trust.

There was nothing the matter with my old Krups coffee maker besides me thinking it was a bit old when I saw the same model on sale for $19.99. At that price, I decided that I needed the new model.

While I like coffee, I'm more of a tea drinker. I keep a coffee maker around for guests who want coffee. Sure enough, a guest I had decided to make his own coffee while visiting me. He got my old dusty coffee maker off of the shelf, scoured the cabinet for coffee filters and dug some coffee out of the freezer and helped himself. He was happy, but I was a bit embarrassed at my dusty old coffee maker.....so, I tossed it.

I have to say that the original lasted 15 years. From time to time, I'd run white vinegar through it to clean it out. [Note: run cold water through it a few times after or your coffee will taste like vinegar. Unless you want to get rid of guests, I don't recommend this.]

What's so great about the KRUPS "ProCafé" 10-cup automatic drip coffee maker?

My favorite feature is the way that you can pull the coffee pot out from under the filter at any time during the brewing cycle to pour a cup of coffee. All of the coffee is held in the filter and won't continue to drip out until you replace the pot.

It's also got the usual filter holder that swings out for easy filling and a very easy to read water level indicator.

I've found that's very easy to find cone filters to fit this model. [Although in a pinch, you can use paper towels as a filter.]

With my new coffee maker, I have the non-stick warming plate. Not only does this keep the coffee hot for hours, but with it's dark color, you can't tell if it has "cooked on coffee" on it.

The only draw back is that it only comes in black or white. Most of my appliances are royal blue and it would have been nice to have this match. For $19.99, I'll get over this soon.

This coffee maker is easy enough to clean. All pieces can go in the dish washer and I've never melted anything yet. [I also make sure to put all plastic items on the top shelf though.] If you break pieces, like the coffee pot, it costs more to replace it (with shipping) than it does to simply to get a whole new coffee maker.

I hope that I have this coffee maker for another 15 years.
