sokolik's Full Review: Krups KB720 5-Speed Blender
My Oster died. It was never great, but it did the job for several years. But, after the fourth batch of margaritas in an evening, it finally said, "Enough."
It was clear I needed to find its bigger, stronger, (more expensive) relative. And I found that in the Krups KB720 five-speed blender.
The specs:
-60 oz. glass pitcher (most are 40 oz.) Mas margaritas!
-1,000 watt motor (most are 500 or less). That's more than one full horsepower--imagine, a horse making your margaritas for you. Gracias, Mr. Ed! This is a very powerful blender.
-5 speeds in addition to ice crushing and pulse. The nice thing here is that even if you hit the highest speed, the motor starts out slow and then speeds up so you don't get that big sploosh as the motor kicks into high gear. It maintains an even speed, and doesn't seem to struggle with denser stuff, like ice.
-Backlit touchpad controls. I guess for making cocktails in the dark? I'm not sure what the value of this feature is, but I wish my TV remote had it, and my blender didn't. It does remind you which button you pressed, in case you forget.
-Removable cap with 1- and 2-ounce measuring marks--i.e., a built-in shot glass! But, the problem is that there are no little notches on the bottom to keep it locked in place. If you try to lift the lid off by grabbing the cap, the cap comes out and the lid stays in place.
-Recipe book. Nice, but I have plenty of these. I guess it could be useful if you weren't sure what to put into the blender. Pretty color pictures.
The Pros:
- It's quiet. Very quiet.
- It's powerful. Munches through ice as easily as it does bananas.
- It's big. Cuts down on the multiple batch problems.
- It stays put. Even with dense loads, it stays stuck to the counter and doesn't jump around.
The Cons:
- It's a little fussy to put together after disassembling for cleaning. The pitcher can be hard to re-attach to its base (technically, the "collar") in particular.
- The aforementioned measuring cap.
- The pitcher doesn't seem to set tightly on the base; it wobbles a bit. It seems that this is intended, but makes me feel like I haven't put it together right.
Conclusion
The cons are minor. This is the best blender I've ever owned. Avoid at all costs those low-power "20 speed" wonders. There is no need for 20 speeds. What you want in a blender is power, and you get it in this Krups.
