Pros: Small footprint, shorter design for low cabinets, great double timer feature. Double auto timers.
Cons: None so far.
The Bottom Line: The KM4065 fits where others will not. Brews a great cup of coffee and looks great while doing it. Easy to read and set controls with dual auto start timers.
treynolds's Full Review: Krups KM4065 12-Cup Coffee Maker
Our last coffee maker, a Cuisinart DCT975 went belly-up after only 7 months on the job. The problem was that the controls were in the base and with an overflow, the machine fried its brains. No longer able to use it, we returned it to BB&B for a credit towards another machine.
My wife wanted another Cuisinart, but as an industrial designer, I felt that many of their machines were very poorly designed and frankly, ugly. I had read reviews of the Dahlstrom Krups KM4065: some liked it and some didn't. Since it was the same price as the machine we were returning, $99.99, I decided to take a chance.
The machine is definitely elegant. The controls are top-mounted, so no chance that they'll get soaked in the event of an overflow. The unit is short enough to fit under our low overhead cupboards, even with the reservoir lid open; a big plus. One of the selling features for me was the large, easy to read clock/timer, with the ability to set TWO separate brew times, one for the weekday and another for the weekend. No more having to reset the 'auto-brew' clock twice a week. The Cuisinart was difficult to read and difficult to set.
So far the machine seems to make a very smooth cuppa joe. I am a home roaster and use a three-bean blend roasted to a full-city darkness. We purchased a gold-tone mesh filter to use with the KM4065 that yields a flavor that is closer to that of a coffee-press, than when one uses a paper filter. The KM4065 incorporates a unique, easy-to-read water gauge in the top of the reservoir area as well as a replaceable water filter that is easy to access on its own wand.
I hope this one lasts...
UPDATE: This coffee maker has a "stainless" wrap finish that DOES show fingerprints, though that isn't as important to me as how well it brews. They clean easily. It also uses #4 cones-style (Melitta) filters. My experience is that cones filters brew a better cup than a flat-bottom basket-style filters.
After two weeks we're really impressed with this coffee maker, and I especially like the dual timers.
