GrandmaSandy's Full Review: Krups 358-70 La Glaciere 1.5 Quart Ice Cream Maker
During the summer months my freezer is full of different types of ice cream. Chunky Monkey for grandma and French Vanilla for grandpa. Then there is the assortment of frozen fruit pops and push-up pops for our grandson. Fall arrives and ice cream seems to disappear from my shopping list.
Then it happens. The one night a craving sets in. You have to have ice cream and there is none to be found in the freezer. You can not stop thinking of ice cream covered in warm hot fudge. Should I get dressed, fight the cold and go to Friendly’s? No, I open my freezer door and take out the frozen bowl that belongs to my Krups La Glaciere ice cream maker. I add a few ingredients and 20-30 minutes later I am eating ice cream that Ben & Gerry would be proud to serve.
The Machine
There are only 3 parts to this machine.
1. The freezing cylinder 2. The paddle 3. The lid
*The freezing cylinder has double walls to keep the cylinder bowl colder for better freezing results. There is liquid within the walls of the cylinder to provide even freezing. This cylinder has to be put into your freezer at least 24 hours before use. Store it in a heavy plastic bag to prevent freezer burn. The instruction book will give you different freezer temps and the amount of hours needed in your freezer (cylinder) for perfect ice cream. I just leave mine in the freeze because the bowl is not that big.
*The paddle is put into the cylinder and then attached to the lid. You then lock the lid to the rear of the cylinder. The unit is now ready to add ingredients through the feeder hole. Turn on the switch and 20 minutes later you are in heaven. The machine only yields 1.5 quarts of ice cream so pace yourself. <G>
Features
There are 5 on this machine.
1. The feeder hole 2. Motor unit 3. ON/OFF switch 4. Release button 5. Recipes
With any new appliance you have to read the instruction book before you use the appliance. Most safeguards are the same but if you come across a caution area in your book read it very carefully.
The freezing cylinder on this machine can not be washed in warm or hot water. cold water only. Scouring powders can never be used and you can not put the cylinder into your dishwasher.
Within your instruction book you will find some recipes. All the mixtures involve cooking. Pre-chilling the base mixture is strongly suggested. The mixture needs to cool down and volumize before you use the machine.
I like to make uncooked recipes. Always remember to use an electric mixer when you are beating your eggs and sugar. You have to volumize the mixture to have perfect tasting ice cream.
Most your recipes will call for cream. You can use whatever type you want but remember that heavy whipping cream will give you a rich flavor and creamy texture. The higher the percentage of fat, the richer the ice cream and the softer the texture.
My grandson loves the Yogurt Lemon Ice I make. This recipes does not require any cooking and can be made on demand of a 3 year old. <G>
For many years we have been using and ice cream maker that has to be filled with chopped ice and a lot of salt around the base. It is electric but takes a long time for the final results. Once the machine stops, the container had to be wrapped in newspapers and store it in the shade for a while. I have to admit that this old maker made the best ice cream I have ever had until I used my Krups La Glaciere machine.
