| Cleavenger's Full Review: Krups 358-70 La Glaciere 1.5 Quart Ice Cream Maker |
I bought this Krups La Glaciere Ice Cream maker a few months ago because we like homemade ice cream, but it's a big job to dig out our Rival maker that uses salt and ice.
This Krups Ice Cream maker can prepare 1.5 quarts of ice cream, yogurt, or sorbet at a time. It is really simple to use and the ice cream mixture is easy to prepare. The maker will include a recipe booklet to get you started. I've made several of the recipes, and I plan on going out to get an ice cream cookbook now.
To prepare ice cream, you'll need to freeze the ice cream tub for 24 hours before you use it. (There is liquid in between the walls of the tub, and you'll know when it is frozen when you can shake it and not hear any sloshing from the liquid inside.) It is fairly large, so you'll need to make you have room to put it in the freezer. While the tub is freezing you should mix and cook up the ingredients from the recipe and refrigerate for several hours, or better yet, over night. The next day, remove the tub from the freezer and connect the mixer portion to it and turn it on. Pour the mixture though the top of the lid while the paddle is rotating. Don't pour the ingredients in without the paddles rotating or the mixture will start to freeze against the sides. Now you can walk away and come back in 25-45 minutes to a finished product.
They do recommend putting the tub back in the freezer for a little while to let it harden. I'll tell you that we never do that! What a waste of time. We prefer the ice cream soft and if there is any left (rarely) we'll put it in the freezer for the next day.
It is very easy to clean and I just store the tub in the freezer so it is ready to go at any time. The tub is sturdy and has been through some abuse from me dropping frozen food down on top of it because I forget it is sitting in the freezer!
There really isn't anything bad about the ice cream maker other than you need to freeze the tub for 24 hours before you use it. Just do a little planning ahead or store the tub in the freezer and this won't matter.
I also have a Rival ice cream maker that needs ice and salt in order to make the ice cream and it makes such a mess that we stopped using it when I found the Krups La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker.
I would highly recommend this ice cream maker to anyone that has children or enjoys having friends over. Make sure to have chocolate, butterscotch and caramel topping available so everyone can experiment on their own.
