Pros:Transforms almost any object with a faux stone finish.

Cons:None

The Bottom Line: A very simple way to give the look of stone to almost any product.  Easy to use.

Over the past few weeks I have been having a lot of fun experimenting with different textured paints.  I make earrings and sell them locally in a variety of gift shops, and my success with Rust-Oleum Hammered finish spray paint gave me the confidence to try other styles of paints.

My earrings consist of the layered look, and metal discs, especially hammered metal discs, are all the rage right now.  I have some metal discs that aren't nice enough to use as is, so I am painting them!

Krylon Make It Stone! Metallic Paint

I saw this Krylon spray paint in my local Fred Meyer store, and the cap of the paint showed what the finished product will look like.  I was drawn to this paint, in the silver color, and have not been disappointed.

Krylon Make It Stone! paint gives a stone-texture finish to virtually any surface.  The can says it can be used on wood, metal, plastic, craft foam, paper mache, glass, plaster, ceramic, paper, wicker and more.

Useage And My Experience

Using this product couldn't be easier!  Unlike other spray paints that require you to shake the can for 1 to 2 minutes, you only shake this 12 ounce can for ten seconds!  I was elated.  The directions actually warn that shaking the can too much can result in loss of texture.

I placed my metal discs in a cardboard box, and placed it outdoors on our back deck.  Holding the can about a foot from the discs, I sprayed them lightly.  The paint actually comes out in little specs and globs. The first spray was a light one, and didn't finish the project - the discs were speckled and the gold of the discs showed through.

After letting them dry in the hot sun for a few minutes (the can says 15, but it was actually much less for me), I applied a second, and then a third coat of the paint.  After the last coat, the discs were totally covered and looked great.  I turned the discs over and painted the opposite side as well.  The only problem I had was picking these up off the cardboard after they dried, as they tended to stick to the box a little bit.

The discs also needed to be carefully filed along the edges to make them smooth, as some of the specs extended past the edges.  It was actually easy to file the edges smooth without damaging the look of the disc beads.

You might think that using this spray paint in the manner I have a bit unconventional, but I think this kind of product gets the creative juices flowing.  Truly, the possibilities are endless!  Since the paint is acid free, it is appropriate for scrap booking.  Imagine spraying this on your page to make it look like a sandy beach!  Or why not spray cardboard or styrofoam objects with Make It Stone! to turn them into granite pillars or other props that could be used for a play or skit?

As the can says, this paint can change the ordinary into the extraordinary.  The can says "One step stone finish gives a classic appearance and touch to almost any surface".

Our back deck is very large, and I have pots of flowers sitting and hanging everywhere.  This paint can take a plain plastic planter and transform it into a piece of stoneware pottery!  Not only will they look much nicer, but they are light as a feather, instead of a heavy bulky items like most stoneware.

When I sprayed my discs, I had them sitting in a box, so as not to get any paint on our deck, and the overspray certainly changes the look, you would never know it was a piece of cardboard.

Make It Stone! silver color is amazing.  It is silver and gray, but there are also specs of dark blue and black mixed in, and the finished look is almost three dimentional.  It's like I added specs to my painted surface.  Amazing.

The metallic version also comes in copper and gold, but Krylon also makes a non-metallic version that comes in the following colors:

* Rose Quartz
* White Onyx
* Obsidian
* Mediterrean Reef
* Jadestone
* Charcoal Sand
* Travertine Tan
* Black Granite

I have actually read reviews where people used the granite version on their bathroom counter, and they applied several coats of sealer over the top.  I have my doubts about how well this would work, since these are textured paints, but it would be fun to experiment with a scrap piece of laminate.

The possibilities are endless, and you are only limited by your imagination.  I can't wait to try the jadestone and rose quartz on my metal discs, but first I have to find them.  My local Fred Meyer store does not carry the complete line.

These are ingenious spray paints, and I am having a ball learning all the different ways they can be used.  My can was purchased for $7.99.

A special thanks to Dawn for adding this product for me!
