Yes that is right, this lock promotes theft, especially if you have a nice bike. I tell you the truth and it is all fact.
I bought this lock to protect my very expensive bikes while at class on campus. I go to school in Boulder, the bike capital of the country if not the world and nice bikes are a dime a dozen. Litespeeds, Colnogos, etc...
It cost me a total of $25 at PerformanceBikes.com. I knew the lock wasn't great but did not realize how bad it really was until a few weeks ago.
It turns out their was something wrong with my lock in the first place. I locked up my $600 low-end mountain bike to a rack on campus and went to class. When I came back, not only was my bike still there, yes still there, somehow the combination had changed. No this is not a lie. After some later research I found out this sometimes happens.
So my bike was locked to the rack like every bike, and I needed to come up with a way to get it off. Well I didn't want to waste my time and get the police involved for they would make me fill out paper work and show proof that is my bike. Paper work is back in CT where I lived before college.
So my last option was to get the lock off myself. Well I went to a hardware store Muguckins like Home Depot and bought a 3-dollar saw. The saw was approximately 5 inches long and small enough to fit in a jean pocket comfortably.
So how did the lock come off in less than three minutes? Well with this barrel lock the combination part is plastic coated with the numbers imprinted on the plastic. I simply sawed off all the keys in less than three minutes total. Then I simply lined up the holes and got the lock off within another minute.
No one questioned what I was doing, even though it is my bike. No one even noticed, and I had my bike within 4 minutes total.
It is a good think I have morals and don't steal bikes but it would really not be that hard to do. Especially with this lock.
Maybe it is good to scare some people away, knowing there is a lock, but it is quite scary that I could cut the lock within three minutes and have it off in four.
Words of advice spend the money on a key operated lock and always lock both wheels up with the frame. Another idea is have your bike next to one that looks a little bit better.
Just some thoughts
