Pros:It holds a lot. That's it.

Cons:Leaks, makes a mess, seal/parts go out quickly, bad lid design.

The Bottom Line: If you need a big stainless cooker, try to find one elsewhere. This KR is not worth the price nor the messy kitchen.

I needed a large pressure cooker, and I couldn't find one that wasn't aluminum in the regular stores. I looked online, and I found Kuhn Rikon had a 12 qt. Hotel sized cooker in stainless, so I ordered it.

After using it twice a week for 6-9 months, the seal began to deteriorate and created a huge mess. The way the lid is designed is such that there are two holes on the side of the lid with the seal seated on the inside of the lid and it's supposed to cover these holes. Well, even at the beginning sometimes the seal didn't quite fit perfectly, and the result was liquid leaked out. OK, so I wasn't fitting the seal in well, so it was my fault, but sometimes I'd have to play with it this way and that way, taking the lid off a couple times after it began reaching pressure because steam and liquid were beginning to hiss out. That got old, and even after all these months, I still sometimes don't get it right. I'm not a klutz and learn relatively quickly, so I'd say the design could use a bit of reworking.

In any case, I think a seal going out so soon is not acceptable. I also find the "stainless" steel to be a problem in that in order to keep the outside of the cooker stain free I must use stainless polish on it after every use. I have 26 year old stainless pots I still use regularly that look better without any stains on them, so I don't get the problem with this KR "stainless" pot. I guess these designer pots need more attention. I'd think that after paying $300, I'd have to pay less attention!

Recently, another part needed to be replaced. It was a screw on part on the lid, and it cracked. I've been using the cooker about 18 months now, and I find it unacceptable to have to replace parts so soon. When looking inside, the part is complete plastic; rather than having the threads inside the part constructed of metal with the plastic on top, they made it all plastic, and it cracked. What a surprise.

When I went to order the seal and the cracked part, I discovered there's only one place in the US that sells replacement parts, an online company that KR recommends in their literature. The seal's shipping cost me $8, but when I received the seal two weeks later in the mail, the postage on the envelope was $2.60. For the tiny plastic part the size of a marble, they charged me $4.50 for shipping and the postage on the envelope was .60 cents.

Understand what you're getting into when you buy this item. I won't buy another KR item ever again.
