openroad's Full Review: Kwik Tek AHTH-7 Tow Demon Harness 12 Ft Cable
For those of you familiar with towing tubes and other water toys behind boats, unless you have a ski or wakeboard boat you have to connect your tow rope to the transom tie down loops down by the water. The end result of this is you're towing your tube off to one side of the boat and not balanced and in the center. This leaves your towable stuck half in and out of the wake and makes cornering a little messy for your riders. They never get to ride in the calmer water behind the boat and always end up bouncing up and over the crest of the wake. It's also harder to ride corners when you're on the tube and off to one side.
----- Kwik Tek to the rescue...
The Tow Demon Harness is a perfect answer to this problem, simply clip the hooks on each end of the 12' cable to the transom mounts on each side of your boat and now you have an auto-adjusting tow point. Using the built-in rollers inside the floating tow point this will pivot back and forth when pulled by your towable. No more making a sharp corner and having the tow rope halfway wrapping around your outboard or outdrive unit. The tow harness keeps the tow rope behind your outboard or I/O drive system and the constant tension of the towable will usually keep the rope from fouling or getting in the way of your prop.
----- What problems have I had?
Well okay, the biggest problem I've had is the small hole bored into the floating tow point, it's downright frustrating! I use the largest tow ropes sized for 3-4 person towables. It's nearly impossible to get the tow rope through the stupid tow point on the harness! I finally got so frustrated I purchased the Kwik Tek short Kwik-Connect so I didn't have to keep re-threading the stupid tow rope through the Tow Demon Harness. Guess what, the Kwik-Connect didn't fit either... and yep, they are both made by the same company! Oh well, I finally jammed it through there and it works fine although after towing tubes for a month I would not want to try an get it out now.
----- Bottom Line
If you have a smaller boat such as a fishing boat, bowrider, bass boat, or even a mid-size cuddy cabin boat, this might be what you need to make towing a little easier. Just make sure and get the right sized tow harness, theres 8' and 12' models and for my 115HP outboard I needed the 12' to clear the motor nicely. I sometimes wish the tow point floated a little more as sometimes it tends to sink a bit with the weight of the tow rope. There's also a cheaper version that's made with nylon line instead of coated metal cable, I prefer the cable version as it tracks back and forth better and probably has a higher load rating.
I'm pretty happy with my Kwik Tek tow harness, it's easy to snap on and off and works with up to 3 riders just fine. At only $16 it's not like it's a huge investment. Give it a shot and it might just end up riding in your boat all summer like it did in mine!
