Oh my gosh! These toys are SO AWESOME! They squeak everywhere! They fetch! They pull apart and go right back together again! These are the best toys I have *ever* invested in!
I have two dogs - a Golden Chow (Golden Retriever/Chow Chow mix) and a Shepherd mix. They're both medium sized dogs - about 40 lbs. I noticed that they really liked to pull apart things. So, when I ran into the My Buddy toys, I was excited and skeptical, of course. With a dog toy, one never knows if the dog will actually like it!
What makes this toy a no-brainer is that it comes with SO many features.
To start with, there are squeakers all over this toy. There is a squeaker in the head, in the bottom and one in each hand. So, no matter where your dog grabs the toy, he or she is likely to get a squeak. Talk about incentive to play! Better still, if your dog is good at destroying squeakers, there are four so it'll be awhile before he/she gets them all! My dogs *love* these toys and have yet to destroy the squeak. I think this is because the top and bottom squeakers are so well padded. They can really take a beating. For dogs who are more genteel, the squeakers in the hands are less padded and squeak with little effort. (I just threw the toy around and I am busy listening to the squeaks right now.)
The main body of the toy is shaped like a bone - narrower in the middle and broad at the ends. This makes it great for throwing and retrieving. Also, since My Buddy pulls apart, you can remove the outfit and the arms to use it just like a plush bone toy. It also is great for playing tug-o-war with your dog. Both my dogs naturally play tug-o-war together using My Buddy.
Which brings us to the great feature that this toy pulls apart. This is what makes it "truly" unique. My dogs instinctively loved this feature. Just like a dog will paw at a bone to split it apart and get to the middle, the dogs love to pull out the arms and the outfit. This makes it a "thinking" toy that will not just keep them busy, but keep their minds active. Any dog expert will tell you that behavior problems happen when dogs are left alone and don't have enough to keep their minds active. My Buddy takes care of that problem by challenging AND entertaining your dogs. My two dogs like to play keep away with their doll. One will get it and the other likes to tug and try to get her own piece to come off.
My Buddy is one of the few toys I find my dogs playing with without having to instigate play myself. They love to throw it in the air and catch it, just like they would with a rope toy. They love to chase it like a ball. They love to squeak it and pull it apart. So, My Buddy really takes on the role of several toys at once. What is fascinating is that, because they love the toy so much, they actually started playing more gently. It was an odd bonus. They want to keep the My Buddy doll around for a long time and they clearly treat it with love and respect.
Unlike other plush toys and combination toys, I haven't had any problems with My Buddy getting worn out. My dogs used to play with this combination plush teddy bear with rope arms and legs. They loved the toy, but it kept ripping apart and I kept having to replace it. Some of them were easier to squeak than others. When it took a lot of effort to squeak, they would just ignore it. They quickly got bored, rarely played together and I often had to instigate play, which was limited to tug-o-war. My Buddy took care of that problem. It is so inexpensive and yet it has outlasted every other plush toy my dogs have owned! Despite numerous trips through the washing machine, My Buddy held up.
This really is the best toy I have found for my dogs. They have different play styles, yet they both love it. Most importantly, it has lasted for 3 years and so has their interest in it!
