Pros: practically cured my dogs allergy problems
Background Info before trying Moducare for my dog
Riley is an 8 1/5yr old Cairn Terrier. Boy do I wish we had found Moducare long ago as it could have saved years of suffering. Before he was one year old Riley started having problems with severe itching hives and various sores on his body, especially around his face and on his tale and back above the tail.
It seems that the problems are a result of reactions to the heartworm preventative and vaccinations. It got really bad after his second rabies shot and after that he was not able to get any vaccines for fear of a lethal reaction.
I had him tested for allergies and he was allergic to many inhalant type things like pollen and trees etc. I eventually switched to a holistic vet who tried various homeopathic and chinese medicne treatments with limited results. We also switched his food to a raw food to eliminate the possibility that food was the problem. Each thing helped a little but every spring he would always have a horrible allergy attack where he would chew his tail and scratch himself so severely that he would be bleeding. I had to put a cone on him for the biting and to help with the scratching damage I kept clothes on him all the time.
About 3 ago after a really horrible spring allergy attack we put Riley on prednisone. We did not want to do this but he was just miserable and nothing else was really working. The prednisone was miraculous and even though there was a risk with him taking it we decided his comfort was more important. We were able to get him down to 5mg every other day any less than that and the itching would start again. He still was itching a little but it was minor so we just kept the clothes on him to protect his skin. I continued doing my research and decided to try moducare to see if it would help w the residual itching.
Moducare Results with my dog
We started with a lower dose and it seemed he was getting some improvement so I started giving him a full capsule once a day. There was no dosing info on the product but I consulted with my holistic vet on the dosage for my dog. Within a month all his itching stopped. He also used to roll on the floor to scratch his back and that stopped too. He would sometimes rub his chest on the carpet to scratch that and all those itching behavoirs stopped.
At the same time I started noticing some symptoms of too much prednisone, like panting, drinking a lot and having to urinate a lot. I decided at that point to try to cut back on his prednisone dose. You can not just stop prednisone as it could cause serious health problems so I cut his dose in half to 2.5 mg every other day and held that for a few weeks. Still no itching but still having some panting problems.
At that point I decided to hold the prednisone dosage but stretch it to every third day. Still not itching and the panting was getting better but still going on ....just on the day he got his prednisone. At that point we cut his dose in half again to 1.25mg every 3 days. Still no itching and the panting stopped. After a few months on this dose we thought about trying to take him off it completely. We did try that and the minor itching returned after a few weeks so we put him back on the 1.25mg and just give it to him twice a week. We are thinking about trying to slowing back off to just once a week or go with a slightly lower dose like 1mg.
Moducare Human results
I have allergies but they do not bother me every day so I can not say how well this works for humans because I have not tried it. In my research though I read that Moducare works quite well for humans for allergies, IBD and also in reducing the pain with arthritis. I have read that it helps people with Lupus and Chronic Fatigue syndrome and even lowering cholesterol. Generally it seems that Moducare can help with any immune system disorder.
I can not find any safety concerns about Moducare in my research. My dog has been taking this for about 1 1/2 years with no problems.

Dosage for Humans
1-3 capsules per day, between meals with juice or water. Alternately you can take 2 in the morning and one in the afternoon. I have also read that you should not take this with animal fat/ protein as it may lessen the effectiveness.
Dosage for Pets
Please consult a holistic Vet for dosage information for your cat or dog. To find a holistic vet at http://www.holisticvetlist.com/ Another resource for Pets. You can get a product through only natural pets called Immune balance. http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/ This is identical to moducare but my vet likes me to give the moducare because human supplements are held to a higher standard than those designed for pets alone. We actually started on the "immune balance" from only natural pet and it was effective but switched after the discussion with our vet. It is also a little cheaper to get the moducare.
Other Moducare Products
Moducare comes in a grape chewable tablet, I have also seen other products with additional ingredients for different ailments.
