A tough hard drive that can withstand shocks and drops has become a very desirable item over the last few years. I guess this is because too many people have seen a hard drive fall over, die and... Hundreds of gigs that you were just getting round to backing up have disappeared for ever.

So the rugged range from LaCie has been selling well - the orange rubber-edged boxes popping up on tables in coffee-shops and peeking out of rucksacks on the beach.
This offering, the 1TB USB version, is no different in quality and build to the others in the range. However, one day, it will break. Mine lasted 24 months on a round the world trip before it started to make funny noises and then another few weeks before those noises, and every other function, stopped. So, this time I lost 1TB of stuff all in one go: Do yourself a favor - get 2 500GB drives instead. The problem is that no matter how tough they make these things, unless they’re military spec, it is the same old electronics inside. While the rubber may give some protection and the case is much more solid than similar hard drives, this may encourage people to throw them around and treat them carelessly… and there goes your 1TB.
