LD Comfort has developed the ultimate undergarment for the serious motorcyclist. Gone are the saddle sore producing seams and chaffing you get with even bicycle shorts. Dual layer anti-microbial fabric keeps your skin dry and healthy, along with a kangaroo proven fly design - How many miles do you want to ride?
There Is MORE In There Than You Can See
LD Men's Comfort Shorts have been designed to be the state-of-the-art, seat-of-the-pants technology for the ultimate riders ride. Constructed of four way stretch dual layers of moisture wicking anti-microbial fabric, and assembled so that there are no saddle sore producing seams along contact areas, the LD Comfort Shorts return a worry free contact patch for those long riding days. But even more valuable is a high waist design that reduces "ride-up or ride downs" and double waist band binding. Using the famous kangaroo pouch as a prototype, these shorts enhance convenience during pit stops. Comfortable in all weather, the LD Men's Comfort Shorts are a must have for the serious rider.
Tired of sitting on a burrito?
For years long distance motorcyclists have known that the key point along the critical path of motorcycling was where you meet the motorcycle seat. Always looking for that high-tech, high visibility solution, they gladly fork over hundreds of dollars for custom saddles and cushions. And all the while they continue to agonize in silence over "saddle sores" caused by Fruit of the Loom seams, non absorbent fabric driven "diaper rash" buns, seat squirming from that lump of cotton you get when your underwear rides up into your tender regions. Over the years and miles I have tried just about everything from nothing at all, through thongs, tights, bicycle shorts, and even panty hose! I have tried all kinds of powders and venting to beat that clammy creep that sneaks in, and all my best efforts have been for naught. Then earlier this past summer I ran across the LD Men's Comfort Shorts.
That's A lot Of Money For Underwear!
My initial reaction to the LD Comfort display at a rally was, "come on, that's almost $50 for a pair of underwear!" Then remembering that I have spent almost that much for bicycle shorts a number of times that almost worked, I decided to take a closer look.
Fit
With LD Comfort Shorts coming in sizes Small through XXXX Large, you do stand a very good chance of being covered. But an important facet of their design comes immediately into play: these shorts are designed to be worn with the waist much higher than normal - the waist band rides almost at the navel (kind of like the way old men and Junior High nerds wear their pants), so a tape measure becomes a real fitting tool. Letting my ego go, I found that the measurement around that area was a couple of inches bigger than my normal waist. So do assure that your measurement is right or you will end up in a heck of a bind!
Next I noticed that the stretch fabric actually does work! It forms to the contours of your lower body and upper legs without sagging or binding, like I had found with boxer briefs and bicycle shorts. I believe that this alone keeps burritos on the menu of Taco Bell and off your motorcycle seat!
Details: The Kangaroo Court
One of the most obvious details is the design of the fly. Taken from grand design of the down under kangaroo's pouch, the convenience during pit stops warrants bringing up again. I do not know about most riders, but I will usually head for the rest room before the gas pumps during stops. Fighting your way through layers of gear is delay enough; the "Roo-Fly" alone almost pays for itself! And again, not having any seams along any contact areas will reduce the potential for saddle sores just about to zero.
The High Tech Stuff
After having worn these shorts over many successive days and miles, in all sorts of climates, and under different gear, it has been a welcome surprise that the chaffing and diaper rashes have yet to happen. Nightly hand washing, using motel supplied shampoo, cleans out any residual objectionable odors, and since the "rashes" have never appears I guess that anti-microbial stuff does work. The wicking nature of the fabric also works both ways. I have found that rolling the wet shorts in a motel towel draws the "rinse water" out just like the Sham Wow's on late night television! That way you are clean and dry to start each high mileage day.
There Is A Price To Pay
Immediately taken back by the $44.98 plus tax price, I finally settled down and remembered that I had paid as much at $40 for good quality bicycle shorts! And then I realized that I usually carried at least one pair of "standard" underwear for each riding day (added to another pair for "evening wear") along on any multi day ride. At times when I was using bicycle shorts I would try to carry a number of those expensive items along instead. So using the LD Comfort Shorts I am able to lighten my load and ease the strain on my riding gear investment.
Promotion - Sight Unseen
I doubt if you will see logos or advertisements for LD Comfort Shorts plastered across competition motorcycles on the Paris Dakar Rally or the Iron Butt Rally, but judging from testimonials (from riders I know) on the LD web site, a lot of serious riders will get to the seat of the matter in hushed, personal conversations.
The Bottom Line
The more I think about it, you might not be able to get into my underwear for $50 - you might have to get your own! As far as I am concerned, the effectiveness, convenience, and comfort of the made in the USA LD Men's Comfort Shorts are a great buy for the serious motorcyclist.
