Lego Atlantis Wreck Raider: Yes Ace, The Shark Warrior Is Most Definitely Laughing At You

The Bottom Line: Not a bad set for six dollars but I would have never paid full price for it.

If you are in to the Lego Atlantis theme and like getting the smaller sets to customize, the Wreck Raider is worth checking out. It originally sold for about ten dollars which is a little on the high side for what you are getting but prices have dropped on them since they were introduced in 2010. Without a doubt, the Shark Warrior is the best piece in the set. Sure, the rover is nice and has movable parts to it but visually the shark character figure is what everyone wanted to get multiples of. Imagine having an entire army of them; in addition to the Atlantis theme these are great to have for the older aquatic themed series and you can also add them to the Harry Potter Rescue From The Merpeople set if you want to expand that one. This is an easy to build underwater mech; there are things you can do to enhance it but it's sort of stuck at the small scale because of the body of it.

There are some movable sections to the rover, nothing that is going to knock your socks off but enough to make it worth getting to add to the theme. The turbine pieces are always a nice find for aquatic themed sets, they really add a nice touch to it and these are perfectly sized for the piece. The lime green pieces used on it tie in with the accents on Ace but you can swap them with red pieces if you want it to have a slightly nicer look. There are two missiles on the rover, like some of the other sets that have these they are not in the best position for use so you are going to have to work at an angle to get them to shoot out when you flick them. They are not necessary pieces for the rover so you can remove them and replace them with something else like a spear gun if you want. The three tine hooks on the end are a nice find, there's a lot that you can do with them if you want to disassemble the missiles and use the pieces for other things.

The handlebar that you can attach the diver to is a pain, trying to get the hands on it and have the figure stay in place is not fun at all. If you are going to use this as a stand alone piece you can add some clear bricks to the center base of it to have it look like it is hovering so you can have the turbines out to the side. The rover is mainly red, this ties it in with the other sets, structures and movers in the theme but it is a little overdone. Visually it is a nice one person mover but there are some cool things you can do with the pieces if you build it and don't like the look of it. Of course the real beauty of Lego is that you are never 'stuck' with a bad set; you have the option to rip it apart and build something completely new from it.

One of the things that most people miss when it comes to things like this is the Lego humor; if you check the side fin pieces on the rover and see what looks like symbols you'll let out a snort when you realize it's really the number of the set. This isn't the first time that Lego has done this; it's a nice touch and something that adds a little charm to it. Since these are stickers and not stenciled items you are going to want to be careful with them when placing them because you only get one shot. If a child is building this you might want to add the stickers for them. I bought extras to use on other pieces and even though it is the set number you can have them upside down or on an angle for a completely different look on other pieces.

For six dollars this was worth getting but I couldn't recommend getting it for ten dollars; if you missed out on it when it was released there are still retail stores that are selling it. If you look online you are going to see that there are people selling this for a lot more than the original price. Even though the theme seems like it's dead and there's no more Lego support for it at the website, it is still something that is incredibly popular. This isn't a set that you have to get but it is one that you will want to get to round out your collection if for nothing else than to get another squid key, Shark Warrior and extra weapons.
