| marytara's Full Review: LEGO Bob The Builder Naughty Spud 3281 |
Lego Bob the Builder Naughty Spud 3281 is just one of three Bob-themed Duplos currently occupying our little builder aka Alex the Architect who is a new fan of the Bob the Builder program shown on Nick Jr and whose previews are shown before several of his alltime favorite Wiggles tapes from HIT entertainment.
Since Bob the Builder is aimed at young kids - toddlers and preschoolers, these bricks from Lego are actually Duplos which are their chunkier blocks intended for little kids. The age recommendation on this set, like the other Bob the Builder themed Duplos is 2 years and up.
Naughty Spud will appeal to any Bob the Builder fan since it features familiar characters, and the storyline can be left up to the imagination. According to the Lego website the description for this set is as follows:
What's Spud doing with Bob's ladder?Spud borrowed Bob's ladder so he could go apple picking. But now Bob is up on a rooftop with no way to get down! Spud better hurry up and get his apples so he can return that ladder!
The packaging tells a bit more to the story...
Naughty Spud is in the garden again. Will he climb the ladder and eat too many juice apples?
Lego Bob the Builder Naughty Spud 3281 includes the following pieces:
Playmat
This playmat is simply a sturdy laminated 5X5" piece of paper made to look like the great outdoors (a grassy knoll). One side has some flowers and apples, and other side the apples are eaten and all that remains are the cores.
Spud Figure
Lego took a typical Duplo figure (hinged waist & arms) and created Spud from the Bob the Builder Series. Fans of Spud will know that Spud is not a potato like his name suggests but instead a scarecrow (at least I think that is what he is supposed to be). His head looks as if its been made by a brown paper bag, and he has a carrot for a nose. This actual Spud figure is wearing a light purple shirt and a green and red striped scarf with a pair of blue jeans and a brown belt. His head is sculpted out of a light tan colored material which looks kind of like a pumpkin and his nose is made out of softer plastic, kind of like a pale yellow carrot.
Bricks
1 brown brick made to look like a tree trunk, it has one large peg on the bottom that is non standard for Duplos, and 4 mounting pegs (2X2) on the top which can be connected to any Duplo brick
1 yellow 1X2 brick with a stencil of a bird on it
1 green 2X2 square brick
2 green 2X2 square bricks with apples stenciled on one side
2 green 2X4 rectangular bricks
Ladder
A red plastic ladded with 8 rungs on it, tall enough to for Spud to climb the apple tree.
Our Experience
Well, admittedly I wasn't too keen on the story that Lego wants you to play out with this small brickset. It goes something like this...
Uh-oh! That Naughty Spud took Bob's ladder (that's not very nice) and is going to climb a tree without supervision! Those juicy apples look way too tempting and Spud just can't help himself from eating 8 apples in a short amount of time because he must hurry back to give Bob back his ladder. Meanwhile, poor Bob is stuck on a roof and Spud's well on his way to getting a tummy ache!
That doesn't sound very fun, does it? Well, despite the storyline of this set being on the naughty side, this small set of bricks is quite a bit of fun. What better fun then to build a tree out of bricks, complete with apples and then be able to climb that tree using a ladder! Spud is able to grip the edges of the ladder with his U-shaped hands, but the ladder must be tenuously balanced against the apple tree. After picking some apples, Spud can sit down under the tree and gobble them up. Then, flip the playmat over and see the cores he left behind.
My son's favorite piece in this set is Spud. He's such a funny looking fellow and the way that Lego constructed his nose makes him very appealing. The first thing Alex did was squeeze and tweak Spud's nose. I don't blame him, it was one of the first things that I checked out also about this figure.
Spud's cool, and building the Apple tree is fun. But, this small set will be best enjoyed if it is merged with other Duplo bricks from bulk sets or any of the other Bob the Builder themed Duplo sets from Lego. On its own my son didn't give this set a lot of play, and we quickly combined the bricks in with our other Bob sets. Still, because this set highlights Spud, it is a must have for Bob the Builder Duplo fans.
