At 2 years old, my son happens to love anything tools, workshop and handyman related. He can often be found sporting his very own construction worker helmet ala Bob the Builder, a prechool program found on Nick Jr. whose famous motto is Can we fix it? Yes we can! So, when my son received a couple sets of Bob the Builder themed duplos in care packages from friends we were both thrilled. Lego Bob the Builder Wallpaper Wendy 3278 is just one of three Bob-themed Duplos currently occupying our little builder (Alex the Architect?)
Lego Bob the Builder Wallpaper Wendy 3278 is a small set of Duplos featuring Wendy, the female co-star of the Bob the Builder. It seems appropriate that since the program appeals to the toddler and preschool set that Lego made this set in Duplos, the chunkier bricks intended for littler kids. The age recommendation on this set is for 2 years and up.
Wallpaper Wendy will appeal to any Bob the Builder fan since it features familiar characters, and the storyline can be left up to the imagination. According to the Lego website the description for this set is as follows:
Help Wendy finish the job! Wendy went over to Mrs. Broadbent’s house expecting the wallpapering to be all done. But when she arrived, she found a big mess! Can you help Wendy do the job right
But... we know the real story, from the back of the packaging...
Bob has tried to put up new wallpaper, but he's made a bit of a mess! Can you help Wendy fix it?
I just knew it had to have been Bob's fault.. Wendy to the rescue! Go Wendy!
Lego Bob the Builder Wallpaper Wendy 3278 includes the following pieces:
Playmat
Made to look like hardwood flooring, this playmat is simply a sturdy laminated 5X5" piece of paper with a crease down the center so it can be folded for storage. The playmat is reversible and features a clean side (with a broom, dustpan and stacked rolls of wallpaper) and a dirty side (with crumpled paper and paint splotches on the floor) I'm surprised my son hasn't destroyed this playmat since its just made of paper and rather flimsy.
Wendy Figure
This is your typical Duplo figure with hinged waist and arms made to look like Wendy from the Bob the Builder program. Wendy is wearing all green (meaning she is made of green plastic) and has splotches of colored paint on her clothing. Her blonde hair is pulled back in its signature ponytail and her neck swivels.
Bricks
1 small brown table with 4 mounting pegs (this is the same table, different color that is in the Surprise Birthday Party with Eeyore Duplo set)
1 tall 1X2 yellow brick with a paintbrush on it
1 tall 1X2 blue brick with a water bucket on it
1 long 2X4 pale creme colored brick with a green and white floral patter (the wallpaper on one side)
2 square 2X2 pale creme bricks with the same wallpaper pattern on one face.
2 square 2X2 orange bricks with wallpaper pattern on one side
Our Experience
I knew that eventually that Lego Bob the Builder Wallpaper Wendy 3278 would be merged into our large container of other duplos. Because this is a small set of just 9 pieces there is not a lot that you can do with it. Our friend who sent us this was kind enough to actually send 2 of these same sets which added quite a bit to our playtime. Plus, hey, now we can play at having twin Wendy figures. (Probably many a man's fantasy.. why not start them young?).
The most fun of this set can be had from the actual wallpaper bricks. Because the bricks have the pretty wallpaper pattern on one side they can be arranged in all sorts of ways with the wallpaper showing, or hidden. This can be used to create before and after scenarios or to create a pattern alternating bricks, or rows of orange vs. creme colored bricks. My son likes to stack his Duplo bricks in a sorted method, placing all the bricks of the same color, shape, and size in a single stack - then moving to the next.
For just a few pieces in this small set, there is a quite a bit of playability. Before and After is a concept that is illustrated well with the Wallpaper Wendy set. First, you can start out with the playmat on the clean side, and the bricks stacked with the solid face out. Set up the little brown table, the paintbrush and the bucket of water and let Wendy go to work. Flip over the the playmat and then start wallpapering by rearranging the bricks in a manner which displays the wallpaper side. All done! Not yet! Don't forget to clean up, which includes putting away the brush, getting out the bucket of water to mop the floor and flipping over the playmat to reveal a clean floor and a brand new room. Way to go Wendy!
Off the Bob the Builder Duplo sets, the Wallpaper Wendy set is probably the most "girly" because it features Wendy as the heroine and the flowery wallpaper pattern. I don't find the set to be overly feminine, nor does my 2 year old boy seem to care.
Overall, though Wallpaper Wendy only contains 9 pieces, there is surprisingly quite a bit of playability within this small set including illustrating before and after, as well as the important lesson of cleaning up messes that you make. Still, I feel that this set will be best enjoyed if it is merged with other Duplo bricks from bulk sets or any of the other Bob the Builder themed Duplo sets from Lego. We've even used some of the elements with a Pooh themed set since all the Duplo bricks are compatible.
Can Wendy fix it? Yes, she can!
