| Freak369's Full Review: Lego Cargo System Lego Cargo Backpack |
My son just celebrated his birthday and guess what was on his wish list [besides Lego’s]. More than anything he wanted the Lego Cargo Backpack that he had been drooling over for that past ten months. After searching high and low and comparing prices I finally found the one he was asking for. After being shipped the wrong item from an online store and being informed that they no longer had the Lego Cargo Backpack in stock I was forced to buy one from EBay and take my chances. The end result was that I saved $28.00 and the person even shipped it to me via Express mail at their expense so that my son would have it the day of his birthday. Angels do exist …and I seem to run into them just before I have a breakdown :]
The Lego Cargo Backpack is the perfect gift for any Lego enthusiast – regardless of age. I’ll reinforce that statement by saying that I ordered several more from this person for the rest of the brood as well as one for myself. You might expect this type of backpack to be of medium quality or just a novelty type item. After checking it out myself and having my son try it out I can say that this is a top of the line backpack.
The Basics
I still can’t get over how sturdy this backpack is – as well as the construction. Most backpacks designed for children lack the correct size or safety features, which often leads to the pack being tossed in the closet. The backpack’s dimensions are as follows: 16 inches tall, 11 inches wide and 6 inches deep. The depth can be adjusted through the use of side straps. There is a snap buckle on the top of the backpack that is used as an attachment to the Lego Cargo Suitcase. The main colors of the backpack are black, blue and yellow with a yellow and blue Lego trim.
The material used for the shell of the backpack is nylon and polyester blend. While there is no claim that this is waterproof, it did keep everything inside the backpack 100% dry during yesterdays light sprinkle. The zippers on the main and front pouch are also top notch. Featuring Lego styled pull-tabs, they move effortlessly and are not the least bit noisy. With some children’s backpacks there is excess material on the inside of the pack that usually ends up getting stuck in the zipper, not this one. Everything is neatly trimmed, stitched into place and completely secure.
One of the very first things I noticed about the Lego Cargo Luggage were the adjustable, padded shoulder straps. One of my biggest complaints about my sons previous pack were the cheap straps that would cut into his shoulders if he had more than a few books tucked away inside it. The bottom portion of the strap is ‘Lego Blue’ and has about seven inches of additional material that can be used to make the shoulder strap longer if needed. The straps are thick and rugged so if your child carries more than a few pounds in the pack these will help to reduce back strain provided that both straps are used.
There are so many different pockets on this you might have trouble finding what you are looking for. On the front there is s small mash pocket that is perfect for school identification cards or bus passes. The font zipper pocket is offset to the left side, which gives it a rather cool look. Inside there is plenty of room for paperback books, rulers, pencil cases and even a rain slicker. The main zipper compartment has a nice organizer to keep pencils and pens neatly and safely tucked away. There are three plastic loops [one inside each zipper compartment and one outside] that can be used for keys or identification tags.
Bonus Item
Some sets come with a Velcro wallet that has the same Lego Cargo design. The wallet is black with yellow and blue trim / accents and has a yellow plastic pull-tag on the zipper. Three slots for identification cards, a coin pocket and billfold are just a few of the many features you’ll find inside this wallet. The wallet was a ‘perk’ added so some of the early Lego Cargo Backpacks and may or may not be included with some packs. If your purchase does not include the wallet, it can be purchased separately for $5.99.
So Far … So Good
My son has been using this for the past four days and he absolutely loves it. He has used it for two field trips so far and it easily carried a plastic lunch box, two notebooks, disposable cameras, snacks, science book, science workbook and other assorted odds and ends with plenty of room to spare. I’ll be sure to update this in a month or so in the event that something goes wrong with it.
Warranty
The Lego Cargo Backpack comes with a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects. The warranty does not cover abuse, misuse, wear or any item that has been altered from its original design. You can return this item at any time to the manufacturer for a replacement backpack and they’ll even pay the shipping and handling [both ways].
The Bottom Line
My son will have to be the ultimate judge on this until I receive the others that I ordered. But as I said earlier, so far this backpack has been perfect for his needs. The Lego name carries some weight in this household and I had no reservations about ordering this from an online auction. The seller told me that if I didn’t fall in love with it I could return it for a full refund.
Given the size, design and multitude of extras I am more than happy with this and highly recommend it to any Lego fanatic. This is getting a little hard to find and is currently not listed at the official Lego website unless you live in a foreign country. It’s been my experience that they add these to the United States site during the middle of the summer for back to school shopping. I have never seen these at the Legoland gift shop in California but some people at the recent Lego convention said that they were sold at the Legoland in Windsor.
So this gets two, big freaky thumbs up for being a top notch, high quality backpack that won’t have your child wandering around like a hunchback :]
As always, thanks for the read…
