| Freak369's Full Review: LEGO Castle Accessories |
If it hadnt been for the early Castle sets displayed in a toy store window, chances are I might never have developed a passion for Lego. I can recall seeing the displays of horses, knights and warriors engaged in battle and defending the castle. Something appealed to me and my addiction started. Over the years I did my best to try and get my hands on all the sets and realizing that this would be an almost impossible task, I turned to auctions to pick up used sets. Even with these alternative methods of picking up pieces and sets, accessories often took a back seat to obtaining arches, gray and brown bricks and horses. When Lego introduced the expander packs a few years back, it was a most welcome wind of change for long time Lego lovers. No longer would we have to invest in a ton of small sets just to get the skeletons or the medium sized sets to get the jousting materials.
Lego Castle Accessories
The set includes thirty six pieces ranging from weapons to a spooky skeleton and serves as an inexpensive way to add extras to Castle sets. Since a majority of the sets are no longer being made by Lego, this is a great way to replace damaged or missing pieces or increase the replay value of smaller sets. Outside of purchasing these individually from brick brokers, this is one of the best ways to boost your inventory of pieces but if you are only looking for a few specific pieces, save your money and contact an online vendor. This set includes a lot of small pieces as well as some with sharp points or edges so keeping these away from the younger kids is an absolute must. One word of warning about this set aside from it containing small pieces is that it is strictly an accessory pack and shouldnt be confused with Lego sets that offer a lot more replay value. If a child were purchased this set chances are he or she would be entertained for about five minutes then quickly lose interest since there is only one figure, the skeleton, and lets face it, theres only so much you can do with a skeleton.
What You Get
This set contains an assortment from the various Castle sets and series. In it you get weapons like a full sized scabbard, both gray and brown crossbow, pike, two jousting mounds that can also double as flag poles, a smaller scabbard and three sword variations [silver, short gray and samurai]. The head pieces have the widest range with my personal favorites being the blue magic hat [goes great with the white beard to create a wizard], full face shield, ninja fortress cover, flip top helmet and face shield and of course the metallic gold royal crown. Also included are to adornments for horses or a royal transport. These come in the generic white and red assortment and can easily be used with almost all of the sets. The white one works best with the Black Bulls sets and has two pop off horns and a large headdress. The red one is best suited for the Dragon Master or Fright Knights but can easily be added to any of the others.
By far the coolest piece if the skeleton, something that isnt exactly rare but not commonly seen in the newer sets. The skeleton has loose, wobbly arms and legs but can be positioned easily. His head is a standard size peg and can accommodate the various helmets and headgear in this pack. There are a few things that arent provided in this set no robes or capes, no cloaks for the horses and no weapons containers. If these are items that you are looking for I suggest checking out some of the online vendors that sell individual pieces or looking for gently used sets that are up for auction.
The Bottom Line
This is a good accessory pack for those who collect the Castle or ninja series. The added perk of getting a skeleton and the wizard accessories makes this a good investment but at $4.99 a set it can get expensive to try and amass a ton of these pieces this way. If you have some older sets and are missing some pieces, you can order this directly from the Lego World Shop for $4.99 plus shipping and handling [free shipping for orders over $99.00 for a limited time]. There are several other accessory packs available for the Space Port series as well as Life On Mars as well as some older accessory packs that are mo longer sold at the Lego website but available from online toy merchants and vendors.
