| Freak369's Full Review: LEGO - Go-Kart |
Before the millennia arrived Lego went on a little spree with small sets in the Town and City themes. They added tons of small vehicles, figure packs and accessories that really helped collectors and Lego fanatics get their hands on some cool elements. Sadly, most of these items were discontinued about a year later due to lack of sales or stores wanting larger sets that they could make more money off of. If you are a Lego junkie then chances are you are someone who hits the Lego World Shop on a regular basis and you may have caught this in their Hard To Find section a few years back. This small but fun set carried a suggested retail price of $1.99 which is a little inflated for what you get but if you are a collector then you snapped these up to get the awesome figure that comes with it.
Lego Go-Kart
This is a cool little vehicle to add to any Lego city or scene, especially if you have some of the older Racer vehicles or any of the Ice Ramp Racers. This is easy to build and even those with a limited amount of Lego experience will have this completed in less than five minutes. The instructions are easy to follow and its only one sheet, ten steps to build it and you are done. One of the best things about this set, outside of the figure, is that the number on the front of the cart is stenciled; that means no sticker to fumble with since its textured, it takes a lot of force to scratch or mar the surface of it. Another nice thing about this set is that the tires are slicks meaning that they have no tread to them. Its not that these are better than the other types of Lego tires but if they had used the rubber treaded ones it would have been almost impossible to have it at this size and scale. The wheels fit a lot closer to the vehicle this way and give it a really nice look.
The figure is simple awesome decked out in a white racing uniform with Octan and Lego logos on the front, it looks great behind the wheel of the go kart. He comes with a functional helmet, clear blue visor and when you pop off the helmet hes got some cool stenciled sunglasses on. Since the figure is in a white uniform it looks great against the dark colors [black and red] that were used for the vehicle. On the back fin theres a small stenciled design but so far I havent been able to find out exactly what it means or which specific series / sub-series to was connected with. This is a great little mini vehicle to add to a scene and can easily be morphed into a rescue vehicle or dessert rover with a little imagination. About the only downside to the set is that it is small and has a limited piece count; needless to say, if this is the only set a kid has to play with, look forward to him or her getting bored with it in about five minutes.
Things To Know
• This set was made available in two formats; one came boxed and the other in a plastic bag. Lego had this trend for marketing smaller sets like this in the dual format so that the ones in the plastic bags could be put on hang tags and to save space but collectors wanted the ones in boxes because they hold up a lot better. Both sets are identical in regards to piece count, end product and cost the only real difference is how they were packaged.
• There are about eight different types of sets that carry the name go cart or go kart [with and without the hyphen] so you will want to make sure you have the correct set number of the set before you start searching for it online. Some of these were part of mini series within larger sets and might have specific logos or themes associated with them.
The Bottom Line
Outside of getting this from online auctions its pretty much impossible to find in retail stores unless they have a lot of overstock. Place like KB Toys have these from time to time but you really have to hit their locations often and ask them if they have any other Lego sets in the back to find them. Two bucks might seem like a lot to pay for a set this small but the go kart is fun to play around with and the figure is pretty rare and can only be found in a handful of older Town and City sets. These are great sets to look for if you are building a huge city scene and want to add in a small theme park or racing course; if you have older Racer sets these are almost the same size and can be added to them with no major problems in regards to the scale or size. For two bucks its definitely a set to snag if you come across them, you can turn around and sell them for twice that much at eBay or hold on to them until the price increases.
