| Freak369's Full Review: LEGO Life on Mars Accessories |
The brood have always had an interest in space so when they were old enough to start appreciating Lego sets as more than just building toys I started investing in older sets that were no longer in production. Some of the more interesting ones are from the Insectoids series that are mainly freaky space ships, alien crafts and large structures. Even though they are extremely careful with the Lego elements accidents do happen and with a house full of critters it was only a matter of time before some of them started getting tattered and ripped to shreds. While the ferrets are mostly to blame, the dogs have had their fair share of what we now call element altercations usually when they step on a small piece and feel the need to destroy it so it doesnt happen again. Much like them constantly running into the sliding glass doors to chase birds you have to ask yourself how many times they will keep doing the same thing before they realize it is futile. There are thousands of Lego pieces and no matter how careful you are they are bound to be a few that end up on the floor.
Lego Life On Mars Accessory Pack 3750
One of the nicest thing about this set is that the pieces can easily be used for any number of space related sets, even the stenciled pieces that carry the specific logos of Space Port and Life on Mars can be adapted for use with older sets. As a word of warning, this is strictly an accessory set that should only be purchased if a child has other sets to add this to. This is a great way to increase the replay value of existing elements and series but as a stand alone product it will entertain a child for about two minutes. Care should also be exercised around younger children since there are a number of small pieces that can easily pose a choking hazard.
Included in this set are the following pieces: four flat round stenciled tiles for the Life on Mars, Insectoid and Space series sets, two space helmets and matching blue transparent visors, four 2 x 1 joint connectors for creating movable or hinged sections, two black grease guns / loudhailers and two robotic arms that can also be used with the hinged pieces to create movable sections. But thats just the start, you also get six yellow replacement rubber bands / elastics that are suitable for Technic or Advance sets, two of the large Technic robotic arms [similar to Bionicle pieces], one gray standard metal detector, four laser dishes [two white, two transparent yellow] and two very cool transparent yellow rear propeller pieces one is a propeller fan and the other is the assembly piece that it slips in to. The eight stenciled blocks range in size from 1x1 to 2x4 and carry the different logos from various space themed sets. The coolest ones are the small flat 1x2 elements that can be used as instrument panels or inside small space crafts.
Since there are a ton of different uses for these pieces there is no correct or incorrect way to use them. This set comes with no instructions but does offer you the ability to add to existing sets or make good use of basic bricks from bulk assortments. If you are stuck for ideas you can check out the Lego website [www.lego.com] to see what others have used these elements for as well as how to go about combining these with other accessory packs to create huge scenes. As a side note, some of the colors of the pieces may differ from set to set, a perfect example of this is the elastic bands. In one set they were yellow and in another they were black. So far the only difference I have noticed have been with the colors of the helmets and the elastic bands but if you are looking for specific pieces and dont want to risk getting something other than what you have your heart set on, go with a brick vendor rather than purchasing the space accessory pack.
Price
This is something that Ive only come across at the Lego Online Store so trying to find this locally might be a real chore unless you have authorized Lego shops in your area. This has a suggested retail price of $4.99 which might seem a bit expensive for 44 pieces but when you need replacements this is the quickest and most cost effective way to go about accomplishing the task. You can try to purchase the pieces individually from a brick broker but you have to worry about getting the correct piece and minimums that are often associated with placing these types of orders.
Other Accessory Packs
Castle [10066] $4.99
Life on Mars [3750] $4.99
Space Port [5313] $4.99
The Bottom Line
This is a great set for those who are into any of the space Lego sets or series. If a child has a lot of basic bricks from bulk sets, these add on accessory packs will increase the replay value and offer them a lot of creative play. With the holidays fast approaching, these types of sets should be at the top of your list when shopping for Lego maniacs. They make great stocking stuffers, are a great way to collect specific pieces or replace damaged or broken elements and allow a child to expand existing sets.
