Lego Cookie Cutters: Only For Extreme Cookie Masters or Lego Fanatics

Pros:Two cutters per package, clearance price, cute Christmas tree ornaments

Cons:Good luck decorating them, a waste of plastic

The Bottom Line: If I trash a Lego product you know it has to suck.

When Lego started branching out in to things other than bricks I loved the idea. I could deal with a Jack Stone toothbrush or a backpack but when they started adding kitchen items I didn't know whether to cringe or do a happy dance. I did buy some of the kitchen themed items and was amused with them but when I received the cookie cutters a couple of months ago I had the sneaking suspicion that they were going to blow mighty partially digested food chunks. After trying on several occasions to make these and decorate them I demoted them from "cookie cutter status" to Christmas tree ornament. Just take some fishing line and tie it to the top of the figure and hang it on your tree. If you lack the inspiration to do that, just shove it on a branch.

The set includes two cookies cutters in Lego red; one male and one female. When you see the cutters there is a little bit of a resemblance to a Lego figure but not much. You can make out the head peg but that's about it. Who ever thought that making a Lego mini figure cookie cutter was a good idea was probably the same person that dreamed up the Galidor series. In any event, someone gave them to me as a gift and I gave it my best shot but there's just no making a good mini figure from these. Why? If you don't work with a stiff dough you are going to end up with a blob when it comes out of the oven. You can repress the cutter in to the cooked piece to recut the shape but even then, you are going to have to decorate them. I used a sugar cookie recipe and that was a bad idea because the dough spread too much; gingerbread was a little better but they puffed up a little too much and needed a little bit of trimming.

The only way to get a good looking, recognizable Lego Cookie is to use royal icing. You are looking at four to six minutes per cookie to decorate them so don't think that this is going to be something that you are just going to "make" in one sitting. Sure, you can ice them all in one color but they still aren't going to look like Lego mini figures. To get them to look anything like what the package shows them as, well, you are going to need a steady hand and at least five or six different colors. The product card shows some Lego characters but to get them to look even remotely like that is going to take some time and a hell of a lot of patience. If you have some grand idea about making Lego cookies that look like specific characters like knights, police officers, astronauts or racers you should be prepared for disappointment but it is almost impossible to get them to look as detailed as depicted. If you see the package there are six figures at the bottom and two images behind the actual plastic cutters – those two are probably what your Lego cookies will end up looking like.

Why are these such a flop? There are two reasons. The first is that they are a little over two inches in height and not the best cut out shape of a Lego mini figure. Second, doing any type of detail work on them is time consuming, even if you are working with a plastic squeeze bottle with the smallest hole possible cut in the tip it is extremely hard to get fine line detail with it. If they had made these in metal and had indentations in them they could have had a much better product. I will take that one further and say that if they had a silicone cookie mold they could have probably created the perfect Lego Cookie. Just think, they could have the Lego logo on the chest area, defined arms and legs and more detailed head pegs. As it stands, these plastic cutters are a waste of plastic which might explain why they are now on clearance at the Lego World Shop. I hope my friend didn't pay more than a couple of dollars for these because as far as they go in regards to being a cookie cutter, they are horrible.

I am a Lego fanatic but I can't recommend these to anyone unless they are going to spend the time to add all the decorative detail to them that's needed to make them look somewhat presentable. If they made the design better or used a silicone mold instead of regular plastic cookie cutters they could have had a better product. Even though they suck as cookie cutters they do look cute on the tree but people gave me a rather bizarre look and asked my why I had cookie cutters instead of ornaments. Unless someone is in to Lego they aren't going to realize that they are Lego themed cookie cutters. The concept of a Lego cookie cutter is awesome but this attempt fails miserably.
