I can see that these LEGO Minifigures are going to test whatever willpower and self-respect I have left, which isn’t much these days. Every time I see a sealed package I always pause and wonder if this is the one that I don’t have. This happened recently when I picked up one of the Series 5 sets, ripped it open and found the Graduate was in my possession.
I honestly did not know what I was looking at when I first saw the pieces to the Graduate until I saw the mortarboard, and then it all made sense. Without the accessories added to him, the Graduate looks very unsuspecting and nothing memorable. He wears black sweater over a white shirt and red tie with grey pants. Give him some scruffy hair and he could pass for a Hogwarts’ student. The grin on his face is actually quite scary. He is showing off all his pearly whites but it looks like a forced smile to me.
The Graduate heavily relies on the accessories to complete his appearance. The mortarboard is a dead giveaway to his identity. It sits a bit slanted on his head but looks really nice on him. It also as a permanent tassel affixed on one corner. The robe is the same type of material used for capes, as seen with the Jedi in the Star Wars LEGO collection. Remove the head and slide the robe into place. Then put the head back on to lock it in. It takes a bit to get the fabric to stay down since it has a tendency to do its best Marilyn Monroe impression. He does receive his diploma which reads “Certificate of Graduation” on it. It’s a thin, square piece with an image of a diploma painted on it complete with a seal at the bottom.
I’ve been hearing that this is one of the harder character to find in Series 5 and I believe it. This is the first time i’ve come across him at all. Each character is sealed in a blind package so it makes it difficult trying to determine what figure will be inside the one you purchased. Even feeling around for him is a bit difficult because that shapes are pretty basic. So far the most I’ve seen Series 5 sets for is $2.99 but I did manage to get this cheaper than that.
The Graduate is not a bad figure at all. It doesn’t entice the same excitement as the others but it does offer something completely different and, dare I say it, almost normal in a collection of oddities.
