When I was a kid, one of my favourite LEGO sets happened to be the space adventures. I had a few that I just loved with the spacemen dressed with helmets and oxygen tanks (or jet packs depending on how you play with them). The spacemen were outfitted in a colour: white, red, blue or yellow. But what I never had were space aliens. The recent wave of LEGO Minifigures Series 6 finally sees that Classic Alien come to life.
I can’t believe that the Classic Alien was a character that was never made for LEGO prior to this. And when I say classic, I mean the type that is out of Area 51. This is the big, bulbous black eyed alien from sci-fi movies. That’s what the new unique head displays for his creature. The black eyes use a glossy black paint to give it a reflective lens. Interestingly, a white dot is also put on the eyes just to show some depth and give it the sense that his eyes have a curvature shape to it, though it really isn’t needed because the glossy paint helps sell that point. I like how the mouth is designed. It’s a small and thin with no emotional indication shown whatsoever.
He is light grey from head to toe with some darker shades for his hands and waist area. The Classic Alien sports a basic LEGO body. However, the line drawings on his chest indicate that he is supposed to have a skinnier frame. This is also outlined in dark grey as well show that his ribs are definitely not made on Earth.
And what is an alien without a ray gun? This one has one locked and loaded ready for use. It’s a white gun that definitely is modeled after the fancy laser pistols from 1950s sci-fi serials. It has classic Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers written all over it with the dials on the sides and a fun on the back. There is a green translucent stick to put in the front of the gun to make it look like that the alien is shooting his laser beam at you. Included is a black display base.
Each one of these 16 characters from Series 6 is sealed in a bag and blind-packaged so you don’t know what one you will receive. Retail price for each one runs up to $2.99. Try and find it for less if you can but I have a feeling that’s going to be impossible with more and more releases to come.
So far I have pulled three Classic Aliens from the collection but I’m not complaining. They look absolutely cool and make the perfect army to go up against my old school spacemen from long ago. Combine them with the Space Alien from Series 3 and you have an armada.
