LEGO PIRATES!! 6224 Soliders Fort Epinions Review
Suggested Ages: 6-12. More realistic: 8-9 for building, 4-100 unless if the person is prone to chewing on pieces of plastic.
PRO: Many unique pieces (monkey, alligator, treasure chest, boat, guns, epaulets (! fringy things mini figures wear on their shoulders), telescope, coins, palm tree, LOCK WITH KEY, peg-leg pirate, British-like flags, somewhat dangerous spring-loaded canons!!!!
CON: Surprisingly simple design makes for low pieces to cost ratio; but the design is so good you won't notice that the total piece cost is very low considering the price tag which is...
PRICE: $49.90 at numerous big box retailers and online. Some resale and collector sites go as high at $100 , but skip over those as this should still (Aug 2009) be a relatively easy kit to find.
OVERVIEW: Presumably British soldiers man a caribbean fortress and defend it from pirates. The fort comes with a very fun winch and hook; firing cannon (mini-balls included, but many circular pieces (including the heads of your enemies!) work as ammunition), and the highlight a real jail that includes a key (and a weak back door for easy pirate escapes) and a secret hiding spot for the treasure underneath an awkward palm tree.
KID VALUE: Purchased for a 9 year old who is well versed in Lego sets; very happy with the durability of this set, and the re-use of the pieces. Many bigger pieces and many many unique pieces. I mean a monkey and an alligator? And a fish? Plus swords and guns? Sweet.
PIECE COUNT: 367
Minimum Age: 3. Suggested ages: 6-12. I will never understand the rating system used by Lego. Finally a set with some, very low risk of blinding (IE Canon) and the suggested and range drops to 3?
DIRECTIONS: As per Legos habit, a very clear, overly detailed, and easy to follow directions. THis one does take a bit of time to put together 20-30 minutes, but overall is an average set when it comes to difficulty.
Mini Figures: Includes 6: Four British-Like soldiers and two pirates (one is a peg-leg) and some fun animals.
If you like Legos, I highly suggest the Lego Membership package for only $40 per year for monthly catalogs and 6 small kits; mailed to your address!
